I do not have an on board air compressor at this time but when I go wheeling I usually deflate then ride home or to the gas station aired down to fill up, its normally only a few miles away. My question is, what can I drop my PSI to on my trail ride today that will enable me good traction yet still allow a safe few mile ride home?

I don't know how safe it is but I air down to18/20 psi and have driven 30 miles on a two lane black top at 50 mph on my MTR's with no problem.

I think all it does is put a lot of stress on the sidewalls. So I guess it depends on the sidewall rating of the tire.

okay, thought someone had told me, running low PSI increases the chances of a blowout, due to the air already being warm and expanding, but i thought how is that possible if the tires arent over inflated , guess it was a buncha bs

Running low PSI increases the chance of a catastrophic failure due to abnormal stress, and continuous flexing of the sidewall causing the tire to heat up well beyond its safe operating parameters. In addition to causing excessive tire wear.

It has happened to me before, so I have a bit of personal insight.

when the tire blew out it was hot like a torch!

I have a small 12v compressor I got at autozone for $20 ( http://www.autozone.com/autozone/access ... 91905_0_0_ )

It's slow, but I'd prefer to spend 30 minutes airing up than risk a blowout. It's small enough to fit in the space under the drivers side rear seat.

im with kaspin..... i have a little 12v pump from sears.... it fits nicely in that little storage net/pocket thing in the back. i think mine was around $20 or so too. on sale... cheap insurance if you ask me.....

I do trails at 12 PSI.
but I always inflate my tires at there specific PSI (35)after a trail,
running low air IS dangerous,your tires are not as spec for on road duties.
In case of a emergency like a sudden breaking or to avoid a obstacle
your steering wheel won't respond as quick as if your tires were at the right psi
It's rough on your tranny.
It's tough on your MPG .
Your tires need to run at a specific psi on pavement.
even for a short ride
In a trail it's another story.

What psi should I be running my 245/75 MTRs on the trail 25psi? 20?

Depends on the trail, tires, and you. On the KJ I'm usually around 8-10 on more difficult trails, easier 15. JK with beadlocks down to 5.

I usually go down to 12-15 on trail. When I was in the Ouray, CO area I ran 20 psi for trails and drove the couple miles back to the hotel without airing up at the end of the day. I didn't feel like airing up and down for the 3 days I was there. It took forever with 35's. Just kept it below 30 on the pavement.
