Would a 2000lb winch and a snatch pully work for my KJ stock on simple stucks in sugar sand ?
Thinking of getting one with a hich plate welded on to slide into My receiver hitch with enough remote cable to reach the driver seat and pull from the rear. any input on this would be appreciated

no! That is less then half the weight of the KJ!!! at least get a 5000 pound winch. I'd still run a pulley. Even on flat land I have seen a 9000 pound Ramsey struggle with a 6500 pound suburban in light, fluffy snow...

Don't they say a winch should be at least 1.5 times the weight of the vehicle should be minimum? So a 4000 lb KJ should have at least a 6K winch.

You will need alot more winch than the 2000lb. I run a 9500 on my TJ, and will have ATLEAST that on the KJ. Stick to the x1.5 rule as a minimum :!:

if you are looking for a way to get yourself unstuck on a budget, buy a Hilift (to use as a winch) or buy a blackrat hand winch (like a come-a-long). Otherwise, if you are worried about getting bogged down in sand, you have one more choice: SAND LADDERS!!!!! You build these yourself for next to nothing and they always get you moving.

Any one of these three options will be cheap AND reliable. I get the strange feeling you will burn up a 2000 pound winch awefully quick.

The sand ladder is probably your best choice. They are simple, one piece devices that are very reliable. They are used frequently on expeditions in the sahara and the like. You could buy them for $160 off of some of the landrover sites.

Here is a pic:

These list for $170 plus $25 shipping. They are aluminum. The same website offers steel ones for $125+$30 shipping:

You could probably fab them yourself from old car ramps. 1/4" thick steel and a 1 inch hole saw are about all you need...

Wow been a while since I've seen those. That's what they used in WWII to make airfields in the Pacific on all the sandy islands...those hooked together though. I used a couple a few years ago to make a walkout into a reservoir.

Anyway, for what it's worth after much research and painful consideration I bought a Ramsey Rep 8.5e from Quadratec for $400. It's inexpensive, but still USA made and has Ramsey's lifetime warranty. You might consider that. Good winch, just not make up to "insane rock crawler" standards. More like normal people standards. Gonna put mine on a front receiver hitch and keep it in the garage when I'm using it for a commuter.
