4.10 Install...

OK. So If I were to get a set of 4.10's for my KJ, is it possible to install them correctly myself? Bear in mind that I am only 2WD. I consider myself to be pretty technically savvy, and very mechanically competent. I don't think I would have any trouble, but everyone always shivers at the thought of installing ring and pinion sets in the driveway. "Just make sure you get the back lash set right," is the comment that almost always follows. Is it really that hard, or do you just have to take your time and pay close attention? Are there any special tools needed? Does anyone have any how-to's for the Chrysler 8.25 specifically?

I don't mind taking it to a professional, I just prefer to do everything on my Jeep myself - if it doesn't truly require a professional's knowledge. It is fun and relaxing to me.

And I assume if I do, then I need to have the Tranny computer reset to let it know what gears and tire size are on it? Is the dealer the only place that can do this on an 07?

I have a write up on a gear install in the link in my sig. Its under Axles. It is for a D44 for but 99.9% the same.

*Edit - File is called "Gears Setup". It's in RTF so its Winblows friendly.

The 8.25 is way different then a D44 since the 8.25 does not use shims for the carrier.

You will need a special tool to set the carrier bearing pre-load.

I made my own tool and you can to if you have a welder. You need a nut that will fit the inside of the preload adjusting sleeve/nut, a long solid rod and a old 1/2" drive socket you don't want any more. Weld the nut to the end of the rod and the socket to the other end of the rod (long enough to clear the axle housing at the end) so you can adjust the preload. I don't remember the size of the nut or the length of the rod but if you want I can measure mine at the shop and pm it to you tomorrow. Have done several jobs with it and loaned it out also several times, still going strong. :JEEPIN:

Cuz I found a smoking deal on 4.10's. 4.10 for an XJ with a Chrysler 8.25 should work, Right?

Dont screw around with this. Have someone do it that knows what they are doing. Its to important that its done correctly.

Yes it is important to do it right. But I'm always in favor of learning how to do things myself. Especially on my Jeep. You never know when you will have to do it (or some field fix) on a trail.

My advice is really read up on it. Watch some How-to videos. If you are lucky you can see it done a few times on extreme 4x4. I haven't done this myself (yet), but when I do I will do it myself. I am just one of those people who would rather try it and screw it up and then have to redo it just so I can learn. Money spent learning isn't waster. More often than not, I get it right the first time. Just be sure to read, read, read and ask questions before you jump in.

I stumbled across a pretty good "how to" for installing an ARB which covered setting up the backlash...

It looks tedious, but doable.

The one thing which I have heard is that it's nice if you can pull the axle and set it up on some stands over trying to do it on your belly under the jeep.

Do you have a decent dial indicator? You will need one.

Sure knowing how to do it is always good but is it worth it? As in all the special tools required that you may never use again. Plus are you really going to carry a spare R&P set when on a trail run and all the special tools? That is one heck of a job to do on the trail.

I know how to set up R&P sets and I gladly pay to have my gears done.

I am in the same boat and have even done it as a side job with a tail light warranty. I would rather have the piece of mind an expert doing mine and I would have a warranty I wouldn't have to deal with :wink:

Just because I want to know how to do something doesn't mean I want to have the ability to do it on the trail... I can't speak for the OP, but I would rather have the ability to pick and choose jobs than need something fixing for $800 when I know the part are only $200 but I have the time over the money to do it....

But I do hear that R&P is a bear of a job :banghead:

Finally got my 4.10's installed. Huge difference! I have low-end power again. Love it. Should have done it a long time ago. Better gas mileage too. But I seem to be more heavy-footed now, so I don't have a really good read on the actual increase yet. I'll map it for a while and report back...

Troy, I know in one post somewhere you put a link to a very complete diff install and write-up on another site. It had some really good pics of the ring/pinion mesh patterns with the gear mesh paint/dye.

I am coming up on the 500 mile break-in drain and refill. I wanted to double-check the contact pattern while I have the pumpkin open. Troy, or anyone else have that link, or remember what I'm talking about?

Decided to leave it to the experts. Fort Worth Gear and Axle. Only cost $375 for the rear install. They do 5-10 diffs per week and have been in business forever. They have it down. Very happy.
