I read somewhere that you have to have a winch rated at twice the weight of your vehicle. Would a 9000 lb winch have enough guts to pull a liberty out? Will I have to run dual batteries If I buy a 9000lb winch, I allready have the optima redtop.

not twice only 1.5 times gross vehical (jeep + stuff probably less than 5200#)
so an 8000# winch would be fine
as far as dual batts go that depends on a few things how much will you use it? how far will you be pulling?
and also even dual batteries wont help much if the engine diesand you make a long pull
a good mesure i use for a winch is that i have seen a 9000# warn ,on a single line pull, pull a F150 up to the frame in mud so thick that a 175# man could walk on it and not sink and he made the pull on a stock ford batt. with the engine running
with all that said a good 8000# winch would be more than enough to pull a liberty in any situation
just my .02

What he said: 1 1/2 x the weight so a loaded down KJ is near 5,000 lbs so a winch of at least 7,500 lb rating is minimum.

Warn are the best, Milemarker are good, Ramsey and superwinch are good. It's really how fast you want it to pull from what I can tell. I've owned all of the above and they all lasted a long time and always did the job. The warn 9500ti that I have now is the best winch I've ever owned. It pulls about 63 ft a min. at no load. That doesn't seem all that important unless your like me and you like to keep your cable wound perfectly on the winch. It takes me about two mins to straighten out the cable vs. 10 to 15 mins with my old Milemarker and Ramsey. The Warn winches cost a bit more but the finish seems to better and they seems to be very durable. BUT I really liked my Ramsey and Milemarker winches and still use the Milemarker on my old bronco.

Just check out the specs. on there websites and decide what is in your budget. If you need a good cheap winch the harbor freight tools 9000 winch it not to bad for the money. It would work fine for pulling a Liberty out.

Wes
