 Post subject: Folks with TrueTrac in the front Diff?

Can someone enlighten me as to how the TT functions in general and how it relates to the front diff? I understand that it act like a locker when you hit the gas so it will tend to spin both tires in slippery situation. What about when it's coasting, or off throttle situations. Does it "unlock" and essentially freewheel to allow easier cornering? I did read a review on here which said that the TT tends to pull the steering wheel to center and requires a little more effort to turn the wheel when in FULL-TIME 4WD which suggests to me that it has some resistance to freewheeling. Is this only under power, or all situations?

The reason I ask is that I was looking to get TT front and rear, but with the wife driving the Jeep frequently, and not very experienced in the snow, I dont want her to end up turning the wheel and ending up going straight into a snowbank(or worse) because the TT is not allowing the wheels to turn freely.

I really can't tell I even have a DDT driving on the street. But it could be because I have had it both liberty's that I have had. Off road In four wheel High and Low mine actually pulls to the left just a little. And it really kicks in Off road when you hit the brakes and gas at the same time to get out of a tough spot. My wife does not like it in the snow because it does pull left. I could Have something wrong that makes it pull but It has been that way for years and still works very well offroad.

in 2wd you will 1st notice the steering wheel will return to center faster but you will get used to it fast and not notice it.I could not tell you how it acts in full time 4wd as I had the command trac t-case.


It functions about the same as a Torson diff which is used in HMMWV's and they run in full time 4wd 100% of the time and no issues.

I haven't had one in my liberty but I had one at one point in my ZJ. Technically it is a limited slip and not a locker but it doesn't have clutches that wear out. It felt weird to me to use it in my ZJ in full time on the road. It wasn't noticeable at all in 2wd on the street. Offroad it worked well until one wheel on that axle completely loses traction or leaves the ground. Then it may as well not be there. As for snow, I don't know. It never snowed during the time that I had the true track.

I think that the one-wheel traction thing is a non-issue on the KJ's with traction control since it can apply brakes to each individual tire as necessary. With that system, you would never need to manually apply to the brakes to overcome that situation. The jeep would sense that tire spinning and would only apply that one brake, leaving the other tires to freely rotate.
