So what is the most effecient way to reduce backpressure when removing the stock muffler and putting in a flowmaster 50 "SUV" series?

The OE muffler causes most of the backpressure, so by replacing it you're there. As with most mufflers, the Flowmaster will get a little louder as it breaks in - be sure to resist the temptation to leave the tailpipe off.

Actually, yes, the exhaust tip is EXTREMELY important in the performance of the rest of the exhaust. As long as you stick with something about 5" in diameter, or larger, with 8 or more LED's on it, than you're all set...i've dynoed them at about a 50HP gain :-P

Just kidding, as far as i know, tips don't to much if anything to increase, decrease performance, as long as you like how it looks, it performs great...

Tip, no. Diameter of the tailpipe should be in the 2" to 2 1/4" range. The larger diameter will deepen the tone. If you are going to lift your truck, you might want to do that first as the angle of shocks, arms ect. may change, therefore changing clearances.

Thats how you cheaply increase the horsepower on your typically primer paint jobbed import's.

So for the most part the tip is for show unless the diameter is increased in order to change the exhaust's tone if need be.

If i was going to do a frankenlift in the next year, would i really run into problems if install a flowmaster muffler? Because i really don't think i would run into any problems...

I think I got lost somewhere in catching up[ with the conversation. If all your doing is replacing the muffler, taht means that you are keeping all the same plumbing. So what is this talk about clearance? I have a rusty's 2.5 lift after the tires it comes to about a 3inch in the back and 3.5inch in the front lift. (that was off the topic sorry just wanted to brag) anyway...If the flowmaster 50 is shorter then the stock then why wouldn't they just add however many inches of piping onto the exsisting exhaust? Confused yet?

Confused, NOT! Been married for 14 years - you got to try harder than that. If you are just replacing the muffler, and keeping the OE tailpipe, you should be fine.

How can a Flowmaster "break in" when it's a baffled system with no packing ?

Anyway, the Magnaflow #15870 cat-back system works great on the CRD's....follow this link :

In a word... rust. Consider the amount of moisture that goes thru the inside of an exhaust system. Ever seen a vehicle have water poor out of a tailpipe? This is why many mufflers have a "weep" hole in them.

The Flowmaster is very strong and will last a long time. My 91 F/S Ram is only on its' second one @ 185k. My 93 Ramcharger is still one is first @ 137k and my 00 TJ is still doing fine @ 110k.

Yes, I like Flowmasters AND Chrysler Products! :D

Here's some pics of a Borla XS muffler welded in my KJ from behind the cat. The original tailpipe tubing is left intact. It's a crappy weld, but what do you expect for paying $110 for the muffler and $35 for labor and waiting 20 minutes to get it put in. I'll try and record sound clips soon, but I might need some help from the tech saavy people to find a place online to host it and create the links.

I think a larger single tip with the LEDs will get you the most gain.

Oh yeah... Don't forget to add stickers... LOTS AND LOTS of stickers. Instant HP gains. About 2HP each depending on the size of the sticker.

Thought I'd throw some more exhaust info. in here rather than start a new thread.

Just put the Gibson cat back on my '02 sport. Nice burble at idle, a bit of a drone from 1500-2000 rpms. Feels good by the seat of the pants. Still doing mileage checks(haven't run a full tank yet).

As for installation, it's a straight bolt in. I had it up on ramps at the rear wheels and was able to get the stock system out, but could not get the new tail pipe in! Had to take it off the ramp, jack it up and use jackstands on the frame so the axle would drop for clearance. Should have just started out this way. Anyway, no leaks, no rattles, a good quality fit.

Would I recommend this system... Yes and no. For the price, it's probably going to be hard to beat. But for off roading, the round muffler sticks down a little too far in my opinion. You can see it clearly from the rear as it is only a couple inches higher than the bottom of the rear diff.

Matt

the only way to have an exhaust system that flows too well is to cut of you catyllitic converters...........and that is not legal so none of us have to worry about an exhaust system that is too free flowing.

would it be possible to buy generic hi flow cats and then use them nad some new tubing for the exhaust system to make it a new exhaust system startin at the cats, rather then after the cats.

if all of that could happen, more performance would be gained when compaired to just a cat back system...correct?

Also, did anyone find anything out about new headers for our libby's? because that would be friggin sweet.
