Hi all, went to see my sister at the coast last w/end, and on the way there, I had what I assume was an audible alarm !!??

It was two sets of three beeps! like - beep beep beep ... beep beep beep type of thing, this happened about three times on the journey, no warning lights up, and no effect on drivability ??

Then the evening before we came back, the engine symbol warning light came on, and has been on since :(

Any idea's guys ?

Scan your OBD port, post what error codes show up.

You need to buy/borrow a code scanner. That is called OBD scanner (you can find it on ebay for example, but i hear not all of them work with your cherokee/liberty here in US). Maybe you have a friend, or an autoparts store that can read it for free. Acctron is a brand for that scanner that works for us in the US. Under the steering wheel, right side towards the center console, there is a big wide port, with a lot of connections (check this link http://www.obdclearinghouse.com/OBD-CH/ ... iberty.jpg), where you must plug in the OBD scanner (OBD = On Board Diagnostic). That scanner reads the codes stored in your ECU (car's computer) and displays them on the scanner's screen, so you can see them and research what they mean. Try reading the codes and post them here so someone can help. Without knowing the code is impossible to know what is the problem, is like calling a doctor and telling him you don't feel good, but no other detail, and expecting a magic pill that will square you away.

P.S. Usually the beeps are caused by the tire pressure sensors, I am thinking you may mistakenly think that tire low pressure indicator is engine light? If you still have the jeep manual, there is a description in there of the instrument cluster, take a look and see if that light is the engine light. Don't want you to think I am patronizing you, but I do not know how technical are you either, so better more info/questions...

oh, and the "key dance" is turning 3 (or 5?) times the ignition on, without starting the engine, some Jeeps usually show the trouble code(s), never worked for me though.

Is your coolant low? Low coolant throws no codes and displays LoCool on your odometer. Also brings on 3 chimes when vehicle is put in drive or may chime while driving.

Hi Ando,

Nice to see you back. If you decide to buy an ODB II reader be carefull what you buy here in the UK as not all of them can read the Jeep/Chrysler codes. I borrowed one off a friend and one off a mechanic and they both couldn't get any reading off, just clear error code (PS having said that the Jeep dealer had problems with mine too :? )
Did you see my PM?!

Fil.

Thanx for all the help so far guys, I really do appreciate it

Right, just popped upto my local garage, and he said he is just in the process of downloading the latest software updates for his diagnostic equipment at the mo, and that it will deffo read the Jeep codes when complete :D .. and to pop by in the week, and he will plug it in and see whats going on :D

Incidently, to answer those kind enough to suggest possible reasons for my recent issues ... screen wash level ok, coolant level ok, and I dont think mine has TPS fitted (?)

I have to say (completely un-connected), after living with the KJ for a while now, and having seen a winter, this is the first "issue" I've had (apart from never getting to bottom of the ticking noise you may or may not remember  ) I'm still amazed at how the 2.8 pulls through the gears!! .. this thing goes like a rocket when you extend ya right foot in every gear inc 6th :o .. and has not missed a beat to be honest :) , I was following 2011 Range Rover back from Wales last w/end, and he was seriously trying to get away from the odd looking dirty Jeep in his mirror with noisy MT's and a safari rack in his large £50k+ motor ..... no chance! ..... I gained on him on the straights, and was more composed in the twisty bits (even with muds on 8) )

Fil - hi mate, yeh got your PM when I started this thread, unfortunately I have managed to fall out with the collegue whos husband does the fabrication work for me .. so the rack I have on the Jeep will prob be my last one from him  tho not befor I got him to fab up a rear dog gaurd/cargo shelf I designed

Edit: no joy from cycling the ignition either :(

For what it's worth if you lack the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) in the overhead console (displays things like external temperature, compass direction, mpg, tire pressure, etc) then some warnings are displayed, briefly I think, in the odometer window below the tach. Given the limited digits the messages can be kind of cryptic (ex. Glass which I suspect means the rear gate glass is open). Those types of warnings won't usually trigger a Check Engine Light though. What I am trying to say is your occasional chimes may be unrelated to the CEL.

I do know when I get the chimes they always come as a complete surprise and if usually takes me a few seconds to realize I need to look at the EVIC to see what I am being "told".

I have no clue if it's the case with the KJ much less the export KJ but in the past I've had vehicles that would chime at me if I forgot to switch off the turn signal after a lane change.

All of the above is based on US models and the Export ones may be different.

Yeah I have the EVIC, and checked it whilst it was beeping, along with the main display ... and nada!

I think your prob right in saying the two might not be related, just a coincidence

No offense to you Ando, but if I lived where you live, I would make the drive over to the VM Diesel Specialist in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

Those guys specialize in these engines, and a lot of us across the pond would be tickled pink just to be able to visit that place, as they supplied a LOT of parts for us yanks until IDParts started carrying a lot of OEM VM stuff.

Just a suggestion, gauranteed they can fix/analyze/solve your problems. This is the ONLY brand of engines they specialize in.
