He said he just bought this and it was a "mechanic special", how do we know someone didn't run gas through it? Or some crappy wvo/wmo? With injection pressures in the 20k's it doesn't take to many cycles without lubrication to screw something up.

Not defending him, but we know 0 history of this thing too, anything is possible...

This is true, though I KNOW the previous owner ran some Red diesel through it but I don't think that would kill the injectors, it's just untaxed diesel. It has had a starting issue so air going through the injectors at startup would be a potential cause of extra wear.

The shop website may be of interest to some http://www.vfidiesel.com/injectors/

4 of 4 bad injectors sounds plenty fishy to me. I think the Bosch test stand loves to generate revenue by calling any slight deviation from new spec to throw a "fail"

That is why I say you should ask for the test sheet printout. It will show the spec and then the deviation. If the difference is .001 out... They are blowing smoke at you.

FYI: The only thing that would get "wear" in an injector is the nozzle tip, and that would be from gasoline or anything unfiltered that got into the tip and was abrasive. Air won't cause issues that I'm aware of, certainly not abrasion and red diesel is just diesel like you suspected.

The major system that would have issues with air is the injection pump, and if you are having air-in-fuel issues, that really should be addressed first between the tank and the injection pump. After that point, it is all a high pressure system and leaks would be obvious.

They took one of the injectors apart, sprinkled some dollar bills over it, and now it passes with flying colors.

They are going to do the same with the other 2 that were not passing.

The leaking nozzle seat one...probably need an exchange

ok guys , my experience with crd injectors 2 of 4 where bad , #1 injector failed driving jeep on freeway , injector stuck open , engine was so nosey , rattling smoking, going into hydraulic lock , had to tow it home , this injector are sensitive on dirty fuel water in fuel etc and yes they are expensive. I hope this will help you.

When I had my injectors tested at a Bosch authorized injector shop, they gave me detailed print outs of the test results comparing each injector to the Bosch baselines. All four of mine tested good with results indicating they were operating as if they had just rolled off the assembly line at Bosch.

That was my exact experience too. After 130k miles, they were shocked that they were so close to the top of the range for Bosch performance specs.

I have come to realize that my hard starting issue was most likely due to the 1 injector with the leaking nozzle seat allowing air back into the system when it was turned off.

More updates when i hear back from the shop after the holiday
