Sounds like a few poor experiences with this "recall". But I had a good one:
I went in to ask about it, and particularly if I was going to give up some of the torque which I paid for...and sold me on this vehicle!
I told the Service Mgr that it sounds like the tranny is crap and they are "dumbing it down" with this fix so that the engine doesn't destroy it before the warranty expires. Both Service Mgrs did not know the answer, and there was only one guy in the place certified to do this work, but........
A few phone calls later, involving Sales and Service personnel, we discovered that the power is instantaneously dropped during shifts only; this to reduce the shock to the torque converter (which is replaced) . The power is on immediately after, and there would be nothing noticeable to the driver. This involves replacing torque converter and also reprogramming the engine power profile computer, along with a few misc other fixes.
So OK I let them do it.
When I got the Jeep back I almost immediately felt a very subjective "firmness" and stiff power delivery which is hard to describe, but felt like an improvement over the original setup. My shifts seem to come earlier, and the tach shows RPM kept down in the 1800 to 2200 range which is where all the torque is. Also, there seems to be less "slush and mush" with this. Keep in mind I have no way to prove this. I had 20,000 miles on it before so I had a good idea what things felt like before I authorized this.
The verdict: get it done, preferably by a 5Star dealer, or at least one who has an experinced tranny guy, and preferably one who has done other CRD's first!. You will not be disappointed.
ps: mileage is 23 rural / city, and 29 for all day hwy
