This will be my first post here. Have a 06 Liberty CRD bought in June 06. It has 1300 miles so far and has not been back to the shop for any repairs. I have been reading here on L.O.S.T. for a few days now. Question, What is wrong with Delo 5W/40 syn. I have notice it is never talked about. Also Bawlin filters. The CRD uses a B1416. I have a Cummins 2001 Dodge one ton and have been using Delo and Bawlin filers since it was new. Not to forget the 106hp,112hp,70hp Zetor Tractors that have been using Delo and Bawlin filters all there lives. Oldest Zetor is 11 year old. Also my Kawasaki Mule Diesel has 9,000 miles and 1500 hrs. on it and has always run Delo and Bawlin filters.

Does anyone know what the factory oil filter bypass valve is set for? The Balwin B1416 has a 14 psi bypass valve and the B343 Balwin has a 8# psi bypass valve. Thanks in advance for any help.

Nothing, It's Mobil 1 5W40 in a blue bottle. The concern about oil has a lot to do with cold flow properties with this engine (thus the 0W40). Using 5W40 synthetics are fine, Rotella or Delo. If it weren't for the warranty games that DC wants to play, I would be using a premium grade CI-4+ rated 15W40 without concern. On your filter question, I saw it on WIX's website where the specs for this filter can be found.

Thanks for the reply. Here in Texas we ain't got much of a winter. LOL. I cut and bailed some hay the other day. Could have bailed it with in 3 hrs of cutting it but I had to wait longer to let the grasshoppers dry out......

Delo synthetic is a good product it has a CI-4 plus rating. This is the best rating for Diesel Vehicles.

Proof for doubters from Chevron website data sheets, it is a fine oil for the CRD. I haven't used it as it not always available here in town for some reason, and then only at Wal-Mart and sometimes at AutoZone but not always the 5w-40 400 synthetic. Go figure.

However I am not sure it is repackaged Mobil 1 5w-40/Delvac 1 5w-40 now days, I remember when they were not, last I heard they were ChevronTexecoCalTex. In other words you will have to prove that to me, or point me to the proof. I would have to check and see if it is a class III non true synthetic or Class IV true synthetic.

I keep looking and here is what I found on the same data sheet I go the other info, guess I didn't read far enough or I just missed it somehow.

Chevron Delo 400 Synthetic heavy duty motor oils are
multipurpose 100% synthetic lubricants formulated for
use in gasoline and diesel engines, torque converters,
gear cases, and hydraulic systems operating in subzero
arctic-type temperatures.

They are manufactured using stable synthetic base
stocks. These oils utilize highly dispersed viscosity
index improvers that promote stable viscosities and
soot dispersancy between oil drains.

This means that it is a class IV true synthetic oil if I am not mistaken, unlike the Rotella T 5w-40 synthetic oil. I seem to remember that Delo 400 5w-40 is quite a bit cheaper then Mobil 1 5w-40 oil, something like $1.00 cheaper per quart.

Thanks for the replies.... I'm able to get a case 6 gals. of the Delo for 120.00

Humm $120 / 6 gal = $120 / 24 qt = $5 Qt, not quite as cheap as I thought, but still cheaper then Mobil 1 at Wal-Mart.

I would say by looking at MDS sheets that M1/D1 and Delo 400 synthetic are the best for class IV with M1/D1 having a little better additive package. Third place would go to Rotella T from what I remember of the MDS.

That said the important thing to remember here is that under "normal use" with oil & filter changes every 6,500 to 12,000 miles the life of the engine will most likely be past the average length of ownership of our vehicles, with some being out lived by the engine. I doubt that 1 in 100 will own their CRD even if it never had a problem 7 years for now, most will want sonmething different or better that comes out in a few years.

I don't think there is a bad oil in those three. Mobil is my preference, never seen Delo synthetic around here (but I like Delo in general), and I would use Rotella without hesitation if Mobil were not available. Just be careful. Talking oil is like religion or politics for some.

Not my family. Here are some of their longer-term cars:

The Liberty will be a 7-10 yer vehicle, with a longer stay definitely possible. This is the first brand new vehicle my parents have owned, and they'll keep it for quite a long time, especially if it turns out well.

Plus, it's nice not having car payments or dropping $20-$30k in cash every 3-4 years for the "latest thing".

I plan to keep the Outback to at least the end of the decade (purchased in 2005, my college Volvo was having lots of issues at 243k miles).

I am using the rotella mainly because wally world and TSC both carry it, Wal-mart has it in quart bottles now BTW

I plan on keeping our CRD 300K mile plus. I had a corsica with 250K a 80 somthing toyota truck with 280K our chrysler town and country has 190K and none of them are/were ever rebuilt. I did always use Duralube dont know if that made a difference or not but I have had good luck so far. This is our first new vehicle and it is going to be here a long time.
