Post subject:  Transmission Slipping

My transmission likes to slip when I first start up the Jeep after it sits from anywhere 1 hour or more. There seems to be no consistency as to when this happens, it is random, other times it will engage normally. I had it at the dealer a few weeks ago and was told that it is normal for the jeep to not engage for 10-15 seconds after startup if sitting for several hours, they changed the filters anyway thinking they were letting fluid drain, this did not solve the problem.
Recently I have had the experience of backing out of the garage putting it into drive and it was like you dropped the clutch on a manual transmission, killing the jeep. I have also noticed an extreme rattling sound coming from under the vehicle in the tranny area that went away after about 30 seconds and I have not heard it since.

Has anyone experienced this and or have any suggestions? I am taking it to the dealer later this week to have them look at it again. Since I only have about 500 miles left on the warranty I want to get this resolved ASAP.

Dumb question: Have you had the F37 recall done?

That's a complete load of B.S., that's not normal on your Jeep or any other vehicle.

Mine used to do that too. The torque converter went south after a while and after they replaced I never had any problems. Im still waiting for it to fail again though because they didnt swap out the pump.

F37 was done @ about 14,000 on the odometer.

I still have not decided if it is the TC or the pump, possibly both.

Get it to the stealership for a new torque converter / pump before the warranty runs out.

The lack of engagement sounds a lot like pump loss of prime and the rattle at idle sounds a lot like a failing torque converter.

There is a tsb for this, it replaces the transmission filter with one with a check valve, had it done on mine.

Most all 06 models came with the newer filter. He needs to get the Julian date off a tag on the transmission to see if it applies to his

Filters have already been replaced and it did not solve the problem. I scheduled the appointment with the dealer on Tuesday and the jeep worked fine since then. I am not very confident that they will find anything wrong with it on Friday.

Mine has been doing the same thing. The delay of engagement got a little better after the filter replacement but it seems to be getting worse again. I also have the problem of the engine killing when I first start to drive it, that got a little better after they replaced the torque converter, but it still does it sometimes. It feels like the torque converter is locked up and when you stop the engine rm gets dragged down until it kills or the torque converter unlocks. It runs fine after about 1 block of driving.

Oh Yeah, and the dealer says it is normal operation.

Wish I had one of those Lifetime Warranties.

Jeep is still at the dealer, I talked to them on Friday afternoon and they said they were waiting for a call from Chrysler. They asked if I wanted to pick it up, I decided to leave it there until the issue is resolved. I am very close to doing the suncoast conversion, I really hate the sloppy TC that is in there now.

Hi Taz,

If you're still having issues with the torque converter locking up and stalling (or pulling down) the engine as you come to a stop, something is unquestionably still broken. This needs to be fixed, it's definitely not normal behavior. Dozens of people have gotten this fixed by their dealer, it's a known problem by Jeep, and there's no reason you should have to live with it.

Post subject:  If you get this fixed...

I took mine in last week for the same reason. F37 fixed it somewhat but it started doing it again 10k miles ago then it got bad enough I got take it to the dealer and confidently replicate the problem. So I did. They changed the filters last week and it is still doing the same thing (though not quite as often: delayed engagement upon restart, shudder and stall (unless I pop it into neutral)).

If you get a genuine fix on this, please post it. I would also deeply appreciate a PM on this too.

I love this rig but I know I cannot afford this transmission to crap on me. I don't have a tranny guy that I really know and trust around here so I cannot get it fixed independantly.

If you find a fix, please let me know, otherwise I'll be driving a Tacoma or Ridgeline before the snow falls (which would really bother me because EVERYONE one of my vehicles have been Big 3...that is about to change if this cannot be fixed).

No fix for this yet. I had it at the dealer for a week and they could not duplicate, since picking it back up it has slipped upon startup several more times. I have even gone as far as reving the engine hard until it grabs hoping something breaks so they have no choice to fix it.
Looks like it will be a Suncoast conversion for me to finally fix the problem, I just need to break down and spend the money to get it fixed.

Post subject:  Explain the pump please

I had the F37 and two weeks ago I had the filter replaced. It is still delayed engagement/slipping and then shudders/stalls when you let off the gas for the first minute or so.

So what "pump" that needs to be replaced that people keep referring to. I would rather keep than move this vehicle but my patience is wearing very thin. No tech would tell me this is normal. If they did, I would have them explain it to my wife. No since in me going to prison when she can get off on temporary insanity. I know all about PMS. Is their such a thing as DCX Syndrome?

The pump was a defective design, where the input shaft seal shoulder could distort the case and could leak.

Suggestion: read thru this thread - it's the only reliable fix , but Jeep ain't gonna help you with it, fer sure -

I gave up on the stealership on mine. I've got the 7/70k warranty on mine and since it has 40k on it now I figure if it the whole tranny dies before 70k chryco can eat the cost of it.

After that I'll just take my tranny out and mail it to suncoast and be done with it.

What is the estimated cost of an installed Suncoast TC and shift kit?

T\C, shift kit, S&H = 800 + what........600 installation? Dunno - I've never paid to have stuff done - paid a guy to fix my teeth once - came home and still had to use a set of guitar fret files to finish the job
