I am on the verge of trading my Jeep in a newer release due to the never ending issues, however so as to maximise my trade-in value I need to resolve this odd noise from semingly the fan belt area (hopefully not timing belt area).

Every since the timing belt was replaced I have noticed this noise, while in the vehicle idling, driving, etc the noise is not noticeable. However from the outside it is very noticable. To try give an idea of the noise with a sound clip is going to be difficult.

To start it is nice and rythmic, it increases tempo as the revs increase. It at idle is around 1.5 beats per second. The sound could be said to be a woosh.woosh.woosh....

Does not seem to be the fan, the belt seems to run nicely along the various components. The belt does seem to move a bit across the idler pulley (forward and back) yet the pulley stays 100% in position, no wobble or similar.

If I were to isolate an area, I would say when in front of the vehicle the noise is louder on the right side (drivers side on LH drive, passenger side in my case).

Doesn't seem to be the alternator, but then the noise that a 2.5CRD generates makes it very difficult to isolate a noise, probably would land up getting my ear cought in the belt :)

When the timing belt was replaced, so was the idler pulley, the other 2 pulleys are old.

Thanks

You do not seem to have a lot of luck with your JEEP. Clutch problem solved?

I had the same problem, on mine it was the alternator pulley. It has a sort of brake shoe in it. That does the woosh woosh.

No way to repair it, you'll have to change the whole pulley thing. Or you can just leave it like it is.

If it makes the noise all the time and at idle, can you briefly remove the serpentine belt to help isolate the noise. On my VW TDI I had an occasional woosh, woosh sound that I couldn't isolate for at least 8,000 miles. When I replaced the timing belt and pulley set it disappeared. I assume it was one of the pulleys but none had any obvious problem.

Thanks, for the quick feedback.

Tony, yes the clutch is "fixed", well I drove it around 280kms it gave an issue going into reverse after being parked in the sun, but that was the only odd issue. I think the pressure plate is in need of replacement.

As for the alternator pulley, is it replaceable or does this mean a whole new alternator? I think Jeep will have to foot the bill, they never started the engine, just looked around the vehicle, studied the service record, ummm'd and ah'd.

If it is just the alternator or even a pulley, that should be quick and cheap for them in-house.

I will report back as soon as I have acquired my new baby, this time I am going for almost new with full warranty and maintenance plan.

The pulley itself is replaceable, but it's not cheap! Like al JEEP parts. If I remember correctly I paid 125€ for it.

What did you get to replace your 2.5CRD?

I haven't yet got anything, just got the vehicle evaluated by Jeep, they are going to come back with figures based on the demo vehicles on hand.

They are getting in a 2007 Cherokee (Liberty) 2.8CRD Auto 10000-15000kms on the clock. But all our KJ Auto's are 4 speed so not too keen. I am also considering a 2007 2.8CRD 4 door Wrangler Unlimited Auto (5 Speed) with similar millage. So I hopefully will have the trade in value and price of the vehicles tomorrow, then will make a decision. I am keen on the Wrangler as it has better ground clearance and much better tyres and the 5 speed auto. The new Cherokees have very pavement climber tyres (I think Goodyear Eagles), no good for dirt, let alone launching my boat.

But rest assured I will post when I have the new vehicle, I may no longer be a Liberty owner.

I had 1 idler pulley replaced, the bolt broke, so had to buy the whole thing in ZAR = ~R1000.00. That is why I want a Jeep under a maintenance plan, their parts are too expensive to keep an out of warranty vehicle alive, especially with the luck I have been having.

Quick question, the noise only started after the timing belt change, could it be that the fan belt is too tight and thus causing the noise?
