There are several of us that are fast approaching, or are beyond the maintenance schedule for the timing belt change. It has been recommended that the tensioner pulley, idler pulleys, water pump, and thermostat be replaced at the same time. I've started a parts list to complete the tasks. I'd appreciate feedback on correctness (most current part numbers) and completeness (have I missed a gasket, etc). I don't want to tear into it and then realize that I have a wrong part or I'm missing something. So far, moparonlineparts.com has the best prices for the total list.

Timing belt 5142579aa
Tensioner pulley 5142798aa
Idler pulley (2) 5142573aa
Timing cover gasket 5066921aa
Water pump 5142985aa
Water pump O ring 5159019aa
Water pump gasket 4864575
Thermostat 5142601aa
Thermostat gasket 5066806aa

intake and exhaust camshaft alignment pins, VM.1052 VM.1053
Camshaft Gear Locking Tool VM.1085

A quick google search shows that www.handsontools.com carries all three.

As I understand it, the thermostat in the CRD is integrated into the housing. You don't get to just pull out the actual thermostat and replace it only, you have to replace the entire assembly.

Kinda like when I asked the dealer for a quote on a fuel filter change and they told me they only change out the whole head unit for $250. . .

Same goes for the waterpump, it's a complete unit, not your usual bolt to the block thingy.

Not to start anything (again) but you don't need the special tools. You can use metric drills instead.

I only blocked the crankshaft when I did my belt change.

A couple of things here:

First, you only blocked the crankshaft? I figured it wouldn't turn very easy anyway, now the cam sprockets, that's different.
So the question is: Can you use drill bits (metric or whatever) to lock the cam sprockets in place? (Thus no special tool needed?).

Second, as far as the total price goes, I got $472.96 from Mopar Online Parts (888-293-4005).

Also I am seeing different prices for the water pump between 2005 and 2006 year models. Part number seems to be for a 2005 CRD according to Mopar Online Parts, but Mopar Parts America's web site say's it's for a 2006. Who knows?

Can anybody clear this up?

I can only answer your first question.

When you take of the timing belt the Cams DO NOT move.

To make sure I chalked up two alinging teeth on the cam gears.(before taking of the old belt!) So I was absolutely sure the timing was 100% correct after I tensioned the new belt.

IMO you only need to use the blocking pins when you have taken the cams out of the cilinderhead and you therefore had to take of the cam gears.

Ok, like I said, I don't mean to start a 'but the FSM says and you do it all wrong' discussion (again) only telling how I did it . You can do it too or do it the FSM way. Your choice.

If you do want to use the blocking pins, IIRC the crankshaft is held by a 8mm drill, the cam's by 6mm and / or 5mm. There is a thread in here somewhere.

Maybe this helps.

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=467707&7

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=39659

On top of that I didn't change out the waterpump. Almost at a 100K miles now and still ok.

But like mentioned in those other threads, the export maintanence schedule says to change the belt at 100k KILOMETERS...or 60K miles...

Ok, my Bad.

The total price I stated above in my post is incorrect. I checked with both today (Mopar Parts America, in Newberg Oregon, and also Mopar Online Parts, located in Westbury, New York.
Depending on where you live, the shipping can kill you.
The total from MPA (Mopar Parts America) comes to $598.84 + $65.87 shipping to AZ, = $664.71.
The total from MOP (Mopar Online Parts) comes to $572.06 + $85.81 shipping + $5.00 Handling, = $662.87.
I checked with Power Jeep here in Phx and they didn't want to play. Their price was $704.08 (includes AZ tax) and no deals. Don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out.

So I bit the big one and ordered from MPA only because I didn't want the parts coming from clear across the USA and I don't have to drive all around Phx. It comes to my front door.

By the way, NAPA has the serpentine fan belt, NAPA PN: 25061130 for $50.85. Mopar wanted $87.77 for it.

I asked the local Power Jeep Stealer if they were interested in putting together a "Package" of the parts list above for us and post on the forum here and the response was that they could care less. Not interested.

I figure it must be nice to be that comfortable in your job.....

You posted the same PN for the water pump both times, 5142985AA. What's different?

The water pump part # listed is correct. I was confused because the websites lists it as only a 2006 part. I received my box of parts yesterday. Most are made in Italy, the tensioner is from Germany. The idler pulleys are from Canada and I'm surprised that they are not metal, rather some type of hard plastic or composite material. No need to purchase 5159019AA because the water pump comes with an O-ring. The timing cover gasket seems small, so I need to make sure there isn't a gasket that I missed.

You'd be shocked if you had to buy a thermostat for an old Mercedes diesel. Some old cheap looking piece of crap that goes in all vehicles, except the one for the Mercedes costs over $30. Not integrated into some strange housing like the CRD. But the price is high because there ares so few of them sold.

Good work! In my opinion this should be a sticky in the tech section and it should be expanded to cover other commonly replaced parts.

As I find good posts of part numbers, I'm going to copy and paste them here.

The 05, 2.8 Owners manual says 100,000 miles or 160,000 km for the timing belt and idler pulleys.

Tony has an 02 (01?) 2.5 - so they changed the service interval.

Or they just changed Miles into KM without doing the math.... :D
