My wife ran our 2005 jeep Liberty 2.8CRD out of diesel and now that we have put some more fuel in it will now start!

I have tried priming the fuel with the pump until fuel came out the nipple but still it wont start!

Any ideas?

I imagina when it ran out of fuel it also drain the fuel rail. So it will take some cranking to get it to fire. Put a battery charger on and let the starter cool between each 3-5 second cranking.

When is the last time the fuel filter was changed? Might be a clogged filter as well if it might of sucked some dirt from the bottom of the tank.

Comments:
1. did you bleed the filter head by pumping the primer, cracking the nipple, closing the nipple, repeat or by just cracking the nipple and pumping. If the former good but if the latter there is still air in the filter head.
2. yes the fuel rail is dry and it will take some bit of cracking to pump back up. You can speed things up slightly by cracking the fuel line to #4 injector and running a few BRIEF cranks until it leaks fuel; tighten that fuel line back down and see if it starts.

Yep diesel really hate to run out of fuel but back in the day it was worse. My 1993 Dodge Cummins diesel owner's manual could be summarized by get the fuel station; purchase some diesel; return to vehicle; pour fuel into tank; pump the stupid little primer lever; however don't expect this to work so while at fuel station call tow truck.

Is the #4 the nearest the front?
When you crack the fuel line do you mean the meta, pipe that goes to the injector?

#4 is at the back near the firewall. Yes, loosen the metal line on it

You don't want to do this often or too much...but ETHER will sometimes get it running enuff to get the fuel moving. Worth a try...but don't over do it

A lift pump and the plunger on the fuel head both have the same problem: They do NOT push fuel into the high pressure side of the pump and up to the rail! The rail can hold a LOT of fuel, so yes, it will take quite a bit of cranking to get it to purge the air out and start running right. (or at all)

Crank no more than 5 seconds at a time, with 15 seconds of rest and cooling between. The rail will wait for you, it won't re-fill with air while you are lettin the starter cool.

I'd avoid ether, but if you choose to use this, use no more than a half-second puff into the intake hose on the driver's side. It WILL fire, but it will also be uncontrollable just like a runaway. Very bad.
