My Liberty has 122,000 miles on it. I've put all but 29,000 of them on myself. About 1 month ago, water pump went out. I replaced the water pump, thermostat, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, and timing belt idler pullys. Put it back together, and it ran great for about 2 weeks (450 miles). Then one evening on the way home, it died on me. It would crank, but not start.

Hauled it home, and tried for several days to get it started. The only code was P0093 and P0299. The P0299 is due to a much needed MAP cleaning. I figured the P0093 was air in the fuel system. I changed the fuel filter and was able to use the hand pump to bleed the air out. I did notice that after trying to start, the pump would go soft. I would pump it up to pressure again and bleed, but no air bubbles. I also tried starting while pumping the hand pump but no start. I had to charge the battery on several occasions.

Then, this past weekend, I went out try and get it started, and the engine cranked several times and stopped. I made sure the battery was charged, and still nothing. You could hear the starter motor engaging, but the engine would not crank. So I tore it down to the timing belt and tried to crank it clockwise by hand. It felt like it was hitting something. I was able to crank it counter-clockwise almost a full turn before it hit something solid again. It turns back and forth as it should. You can feel the engine go through the different stages, but only about 1 revolution.

Could this be a bent or stuck valve? I have not pulled the valve cover and head off. I am hesitant about going any further into the engine. I am not a mechanic by any means, and don't want to get in over my head, or get it to a point where an actual mechanic won't mess with it. Anybody know of an experienced Liberty CRD mechanic in the Lawton or Oklahoma city area? I appreciate any help or information.

What if you have a injector that is stuck open and filling a cylinder with fuel. That would cause the p093 error and also not being able to turn the crank completly around because the fuel won't compress

When you took the timing cover off did all look good

Yes. The first thought I had was one of the camshaft gear bolts backed off and my timing was off. Both were tight. Everything looked good.

I also forgot to mention, after initially checking the codes, I cleared them and during the mutiple start-up tries, I did not get any more codes.

If it is a stuck injector causing a cylinder to fill up, how can I drain the cylinder to verify this

Pull the injectors untill you find the leaking one if it is a leaking injector.

Sure your not just hitting the compression stroke?

You say your not a mechanic but you changed the waterpump and timing belt? Sounds like your on your way. Might be easier to pull the glow plugs and rotate the engine to verify you are actually hitting something. If you are hitting something,don't force it.

I first thought of pulling the glow plugs too but then remembered they were ceramic and are easilly breakable

At 122,000 miles they are due for replacement anyway.

Since the new metal glow plug flash is lost in the Twilight Zone some place, best to order new Ceramics from Oxygen Sensor.net and replace them all. Treat them like they are Nitro-Glycerin and you should be OK. If you break one, you need to pull the head. Test them with a good VOM for resistance before you turn over the engine.

Yes, I'm sure it's not the compression stroke. It sounds and feels like a solid metal on metal contact.

As for being a mechanic, I've always tried to do what repars I've felt comfortable with. And with all the information available on the web, and especialy this forum for the CRD, I've been able to do more repair and maintenance work myself. That being said, I've not ventured into engine repairs before. If I can determine the problem, and believe I can do the repair work, I will. Otherwise, I'm going to need to find an experienced mechanic to fix my CRD. I will look into pulling the glow plugs to see if I can find what is hitting.
