You say your not a mechanic but you changed the waterpump and timing belt? Sounds like your on your way. Might be easier to pull the glow plugs and rotate the engine to verify you are actually hitting something. If you are hitting something,don't force it.
Yes, I'm sure it's not the compression stroke. It sounds and feels like a solid metal on metal contact.
As for being a mechanic, I've always tried to do what repars I've felt comfortable with. And with all the information available on the web, and especialy this forum for the CRD, I've been able to do more repair and maintenance work myself. That being said, I've not ventured into engine repairs before. If I can determine the problem, and believe I can do the repair work, I will. Otherwise, I'm going to need to find an experienced mechanic to fix my CRD. I will look into pulling the glow plugs to see if I can find what is hitting.
