So I was able to get my Liberty into the garage today. I had just enough umph in 4wd to get it through a tiny bit of snow and over the lip of the garage floor (gravel driveway). I pulled the transmission pan and expected to find a load of shrapnel.

Nada. Here's what I did find:
Image

Just some metal 'dust', which I hear is normal wear and tear.

To recap real quick, the jeep doesn't really move while in gear. Engine just spins. I barely got it 10 feet today. Happened pretty suddenly. I drove it the day before, then the next day it wouldn't move. Before this though, I did have a shudder at 2700 rpms. It didn't matter what gear I was in.

Here's what I have checked:
* Fluid was full
* Lower filter appeared to be on all the way. I will double check before I do much else.
* Fluid did not smell burnt as far as I could tell.

So what's next? Does this sound like a toasted torque converter?

thx

You could have sheared off your torque converter bolts. It has happened to a few people. There is a plug to access the TC bolts above the starter. I would look in there and see if the flywheel is still attached to the TC.

Interesting. I will check that out. I imagine I still have to take the transmission off the engine if this is what it turns out to be.

thx

When my torque converter failed, I didn't have any crud or shrapnel in my oil pan either....it was all in my bell housing/in the area between the TC and front pump.

That fluid doesn't look too good IMO. My xj had a similar fluid color when I didn't have an additional cooler and I drove the car in high summer temp and bunch of hills.

Can you hear the tranny coupling when you shift from p in hear?

No, I don't. Normally I feel a nice *thunk* when it's all engaged. I haven't since it's been broken.

We drove the jeep pretty hard this summer. I towed 4500lbs for 2,000 miles. Pulled like a champ, but that would probably explain the state of the fluid.

Do you have a cooler? Also, where in New England are you?

When you shear off and/or strip your torque converter to flex plate bolts, it will sound like an older 7.3L Power Stroke starting up cold at -10F with out being plugged in. If you never heard the noise like an older 7.3L Power Stroke starting up cold at -10F, pop the inspection plug or starter and check the bolts, if you don't see them missing, chance are you had something inside the torque converter or trans has failed.
If you have the pre Euro stock converter, that may be all that has failed.
If the pre-Euro stock converter has failed, it may have sent crap into your trans that needs to be cleaned out.
Some of the Stock converters had some weak rivets that can fail and not necessarily trash the trans, good luck.

ChooChooman74:
I haven't installed a cool, but I thought these jeeps had a stock cooler (correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm on the coast of NH. Been here about 8 months, moved from Colorado. That's where I bought the Liberty.

Warp2diesel:
That's the funny thing, it doesn't sound broken. In fact it sounds fine. This is the original, pre-euro TC as far as I know. I'll check out the inspection plug and see what's going on. It sounds like, if the TC failed, I won't really know until I pull the transmission.

Thanks everyone.

They have a stock cooler, but for towing, it is recommended to add a cooler...
