I am trying to replace the upper control arm on the drivers side of my CRD. I am having problems accessing the nut on the rear bolt. My alldata account states, "Remove the upper control arm rear bolt by using a ratchet and extension under the steering shaft and positioned by the power steering reservoir."

The power steering reservoir is on the passenger side so this is evidently written for the gasser version. From the top I cannot seem to be able to get to the bolt. On the bottom I can reach it but there are two hard brake lines in front of it.

Just looking for any tips or suggestions.

Had to use a pneumatic wrench, uni joint and 2 extensions to undo the rear drivers side bolt on a KK petrol due to lots of obstructions including the steering shaft. Also had to remove the air filter box, but the diesel engine bay is probably completely different? All work was done from above except extracting the bolts, good luck. Edit: thought I was on another forum when I posted this, so you should know that my Jeep is RHD which may or may not change things?

By rear do you mean the one closes to the drive on the one furthest form the driver? I did both on mine by feel with and open in box end under the hood and a impact wrench and exstentions and a swivel or 2. But I did have to swap to ratching box end wrench on the back one towards the end.

The one on the drivers side closest to the driver.

I ended up using an open end wrench, from the under side. I then took off the CAC hose and used a socket with a couple of extension to get it the rest of the way off. I have the new one in with the bolts in place, just need to thread on and tighten the nuts. I have read in another thread that the nuts should not be tightened until the tire is back on and on the ground, is this true?

I also am planning on replacing the strut, spring, and axle of both sides of the front(and hub on the drivers side), and the shocks on the rear this weekend. The Jeep is in my driveway with no shelter, I was planning on doing the other work at my dads under his shed. My question is that now that I am so far into the front end, should I just do the rest of the work here, or button everything back up just to tear it back down again?

1. True
2. I wouldn't want to do it twice, but depends on weather I guess.

Yes, have to tighten with vehicle weight placed on suspension. The rear is a piece of cake so do it wherever but I don't know how a front only lifted KJ would drive like? Probably look hilarious though. :)

Not doing a lift, just replacing a bunch of worn out components. I am also going to be replacing the rear shocks, I might do the rear springs at a later date. No matter how much it looks like it, you cannot pull the axle out with just the upper ball joint separated, their seems to be a reason that the FSM says that you need to separate the lower one.

Now I'm having an issue separating the lower ball joint from the knuckle. Maybe tomorrow I can wrap all of this up.
