I see owners reporting 24-30 mpg.
I am a conservative driver (light footed) but the best I can eke out is 21 mpg. What am I doing wrong? The car I traded in would normally get about 22 mpg and with the diesel premium I think the breakeven mpg would be about 25-26 mpg.

Are you calculating by hand or using the EVIC?
Are you doing highway or city miles?
If you're stock, you won't get better mileage than a crd with a tune. GDE is the way to go.
I have a gasoline Liberty, but this is what I know from browsing this section from time to time.
Also, Have you read this? viewtopic.php?f=5&t=54207

Check out my fuelly for 8 1/2 years worth of data.

Executive summary:
Winter 20-22, Summer 24-26 - without GDE tune
Winter 22-24, Summer 26-28 - with GDE tune (most recent two years)

I live out in the Amish countryside so most of mine is 4-5 miles trips to groc, hardware store, etc. I am thinking of doing the
GDE ecotune but being cheap I think the cost would require hundreds of thousands of miles to justify it on mpg alone.
Thanks for the input.

I bought my CRD with 62K miles on it. Drove it home 1700 miles and averaged 24 miles per gallon based on fuel, not the computer. As soon as I got it home I cleaned the MAP sensor. That caused one of the boost hoses to blow. Replaced the hose, and did the GDE Eco tune. Average 32mpg now.

if your milage is that low it is never really getting warm, or there is another problem.

Don't be worried too much about the mileage. There are several factors that contribute to the mileage, more than you may think on this jeep: tires and tire pressure (any aggressive thread, such as offroad tires will negatively affect mileage, the tire is heavier, the thread has more rolling resistance, pressure, 40+ psi will increase the mileage) dragging Brakes, especially front, the caliper has a rubber boot in one of the caliper sliding rod, to eliminate the noise, that boot gets swollen causing the brakes to drag since the sliding of the caliper on the bracket assembly will be hardened by that swollen boot, even if the wheel doesn't get hot - I took mine out), a thermostat that doesn't work properly, cold temperatures that keep the viscous heater running longer, clogged map sensor, viscous fan, that spins all the time, even if the clutch is not engaged (replace with efan), drive shaft ujoints that are dragging (rusty, stuck, replace with greasable from napa - made in USA - oh, and btw, make a habit in greasing them every few months, too much Grease won't hurt, it will be thrown out on your jeep chassis), bad bearings... That's only few that I can think of.

My jeep got best mileage a bit over 30, on a 500 mile trip, going with about 72mph, almost no traffic, tires at 45psi, offroad tires, e-fan, non dragging brakes, new ujoints, cleaned map, gde Eco tune, and a very light foot. Normally, I get about 25 mpg city drive, with again light throttle, and winter I get lower 20s at best. So it is possible to get upper 30s on longer trips, but don't expect that in city drive and no way in the winter, you'll be OK to get mid-upper 20s.

Also, the odometer is known to be inaccurate, use a GPS to measure the distance and calculate the error, with my tires (245x70x16) my odo shows 7%less miles, that compared to the GPS several times.

Regarding gde tune, that is the first, best investment you can do for the crd. If you plan on keeping the jeep, don't hesitate to get it, not only for miles per gallon purpose, but for smiles per gallon consideration. Lol. It will make your engine run smoother and cleaner, more torque and power, what would be a reason not to get it if you plan keeping the crd for a while? Think about it as a difference in 2 people, one that eats healthy and organic, and one that has a regular McDonald's burger diet (that's your crd without gde tune), who is supposed to live more?

Also, keep in mind this is a jeep, a box on wheels, any breeze of wind may drop the mileage. This is a reasonably efficient engine, it is heavily influenced by wind, it's more sensitive that a big Cummins or powerstroke. I one am happy with the mileage I get, if I need 40+ mpg, I'll get a jetta tdi, I didn't get a jeep for mileage.

One of the other major benefits is that it keeps the recirculated soot out of your engine. This is very apparent when you compare the oil, look and feel, before and after. In my case the FCV failed and I would not have been able to pass the emissions test here without either a new FCV or the GDE tune. Faced with a ~$350 price tag for a replacement FCV the tune was a no brainer. I also estimate about $450 savings in fuel costs since being tuned 27 months ago.

That, right there, explains why your mileage is what it is.

Until the engine gets up to operating temperature, it wastes a lot of fuel trying to warm up, and so the first half of your trips are in fuel-wasting-warm-up mode. This is going to kill your mileage.

If you are getting 21, that's about the best you can do with all those short trips.

Hmmm....yeah, unless you have a heated garage, and/or put electric heaters (not the cheap ones from the factory) in your coolant and lube reservoirs to pre-heat the engine & transmission fluids up to 100+ degrees F, you're always going to have poor fuel economy on short trips. Typically, the first 10 miles are the worst 10 miles in terms of fuel economy (summer and winter), and it's even worse if you let it idle to warm up.
