Hi All,

My puppy needs help! :)
I bought my 2005 CRD in July 2014 from a private owner in FL. It had 160k at the time, with a Sasquatch EGR kit installed.
I drove it from FL to PA and got nearly 30mph. Had it checked out with a diesel mechanic and he was encouraging that it was in good shape.
It's alternator then died on the way home from the shop! He came out and got the car, and installed the alternator. Ran great.

Hard winter this year with temps steadily below freezing for months. Noticed transmission shifting hard (clunk) and MPH dropped drastically and black smoke at start up or hard accelerations. Stopped driving it unless needed. Warmer climate and mph is climbing. Transmission seems to still shift hard, especially if being driven hard. Easier shift with easier acceleration. Smoke is happening, still.

Was away for 4 weeks. Car sat in drive. Found oil puddle (dried) underneath -- first time. Drove car for 4 days and ran fine, no more leaks on drive.
Wednesday morning car turned over, and died at idle (slight uphill parking angle). Could not get it to catch again. Waited and tried again after getting fuel (diesel) from gas station (was registering nearly a 1/4 tank, but thought perhaps??). Added fuel and tried again (repositioned car downhill), turned over and caught, but died even faster. Called for tow.

Tow truck driver worked key in ignition 3-5x before turning it over (he explained he was attempting to 'prime' it in case it was a fuel pump problem). Pedal to the floor, he revved the engine high and it seemed to idle fine. At this point, he showed me how to trigger the ignition to show computer error codes. I did not write them down. Not trusting the 'fix', not knowing the root of the problem, I decided to have him tow it to a local mech who works on diesels and Jeeps. It needs some work to pass inspection (electric harness in passenger front wheel well is rubbed through by oversized tires and no guard, so lights aren't operational in rear area now), and so I thought it was just time. The diesel mech came back with a bad injector (190k on the jeep, with original injectors) and $900 parts cost from dealer.

I'm learning the skills of navigating on this members site, and learning about my jeep a bit at a time. I haven't found the answer to my original reason for coming here, so here's my other query: The Mech wanted to order $900 injector from Jeep to assure correct fit and reliable part. I could find a Bosch on-line (new) for a bit over $300. Could you all recommend an aftermarket part supplier who can deliver a reliable injector for less than $900? ...and any key details to be sure I'm getting the right part? I was going to go with Bosch diesel fuel injector as it's a Bosch system...but am open to 5-star aftermarket recommendations/referrals.

I will continue to look through threads...just thought I'd ask to get going in a productive direction faster... :)
Certainly I have a lot of questions for the mechanic -- what the codes read; was the MAP cleaned and there was one more...and a lot more as I read and learn.

Thank you all for your amazing posts!!

2005 Jeep Liberty CRD (from FL)
Bought in July 2014: 160k June 2015: 190k
Sasquatch EGR bypass
Clunks sometimes when it shifts in the lower gear range; black smoke from exhaust
Oversized tires...rear ones are almost bare. Can't wait to get more reasonably sized tires to eliminate the rubbing sound when cornering, and get the wheel well protective guards back in place.

Lets first address the main problem that is fuel delivery and/or bad injector...

Has the fuel filter assembly been replace with the newer upgraded Mopar assembly?
If you dont know, can you take a picture of it and post it so that we can see it and confirm?
If not, here is a quick test:
1. the fuel filter head has two wire connectors on it, remove them and inspect for any wetness from fuel leaks.
2. if there is evidence of fuel leaks there, you will need a new fuel filter assembly because those leaks are allowing air into the fuel lines which is bad for a diesel.

If there is no evidence of fuel leaks, you may just need a new fuel filter. Especially if you dont know the last time it was changed.

Injector problems are rare. I'd hate for you to replace an injector and have it not fix the problem.

FYI,
At 190,000 miles, you are getting close to needing a second timing belt replacement. Start making plans for it. The first timing belt replacement should have been at 100,000 miles.

Hi Flash!

Thanks for the first steps! Unfortunately, the car is at the mechanic's. I've just returned from asking the mechanic a number of questions based on what I read.
I was relieved to hear what Mike the Mechanic said, as he stated he tested the injectors the way you all supported the other CRD thread father to test his injectors. (removing the connector and putting in a tube line to watch the fuel)
Mike said the injectors were all filling too fast, and the one was filling even faster than the others. With it filling too fast and an error code for the fuel system, he followed to the fuel problem from filter to housing assembly. His repair scenario included a fuel housing assembly replacement as well as the one injector.

Whereas his parts man (Terry) stated they'd rather use the dealership parts for something like the injectors, in speaking with Mike, he's not adverse to a rebuilt injector. He did say they get parts from 6 suppliers and none were in stock outside of the dealership (for new). So now with VIN in hand, I'm looking into other suppliers and possibly rebuilt injectors.

Mike's also taking care of the sensor on the transmission that was causing the hard shifting.

I will start planning for the next timing belt change. And, I've broached a diesel mechanic who will start training me on the car, and allowing me access to his shop tools so I can start keeping her up myself for the basics, and even get ahead of the curve to maximize her efficiency and handling.

You all will be hearing from me regularly, no doubt! :)

Welcome to the forum!

Check out these guys for injectors:

http://oregonfuelinjection.com/index.php?pid=56
http://idparts.com/catalog/product_info ... ts_id=2752

Don't forget to also replace the copper o-ring. Also, you will need to reprogram your ECU after installing the new injector.

Awesome referrals, everyone! I'm compiling a list. Is this list something we can store here on this forum? Is there a 'thread' out there already? If so, I missed it. I found the list of mechanics by state...but not this supplier info. And that reminds me. I need to add Mike to PA's listing.

With a shorter timeframe than I would have liked and lots of trial and error on google, I found a new Bosch fuel injector at http://www.carpartswarehouse.com
$550, no shipping charge (4 day delivery) or overnight (+25), and a core-thing...I pay them $50 now, ship them the core (aka the injector being replaced) and they give me back the $50 when it's received. Seemed a bit strange to 'require' me to pay this price for the 'core'. And I did it.
Mike will have it Thursday! Yeah! I may have my pup back on Monday. Mike says he's had no trouble starting it since it came to him...hmmmm.
I'm out of town Thurs-Sun :( or I'd have it sooner!!

Fred (a local-Modena, PA-vintage Mercedes diesel mechanic I adore) is going to help me, and he's willing to mentor me (like you all!), and I'm hoping we can work out a deal for me to use his garage equipment and such for regular maintenance, cleaning of sensors, etc... His garage is basic, and doesn't have a lot of the electronics needed for the more computerized repairs on the Jeep, so I need Mike, too. Fred shares his knowledge so generously, as do you all! He gives me the 'low down' on systems and what I can expect. He's saying that it may be more than the fuel housing and the injector. Keeping my fingers crossed that's not the case this time!

Love this community. Thank you for all you share...and your patient mentoring that I've read, and will experience!

Something I didn't share earlier, I want to run this jeep on biodiesel I make at home. Once I get familiar with her (Birgitta!), and get her running with confidence, I'll move into the green fuel area. Luckily, I have a love of a good man behind me on this project (my husband). He's not only encouraging, he's patient! Great combo!!

And thanks to all you good men (and women? I doubt that I'm alone in this) out there with this forum!

Cheers!
Maggie

@Rankom
I, too, am glad Mike tested the injectors as you all described in other posts. It makes me feel more comfortable with his service!
