225K with original set of ceramic glow plugs. Can't complain about that. They are a wear item like spark plugs.

Good to hear on all three respects. Glad you got it there safe, that he will be joining the group here, and eventually bringing it back from Kaliforniastan to the free land.

He can always ask for help on any issue and I know we will do our best to find a solution.

About half of these engines I open have gouges in the pistons, heads, and valves from those glow plug tips. I replace the valves just in case they are bent. They score the sides of the sleeves also, but that smooths out. :furious:

That would explain the divots I found in the pistons of the last one I opened - But I didn't even have to open it to the pistons, it ran fine and strong. I pulled the head anyway and rebuilt it with fresh valves and gasket, studs, (already had new rockers, but NOT studs?) and new plugs even though it also had the Etechnos. Also new intake elbow and stage 2 delete, fuel filter, oil change, transmission change, harmonic balancer, alternator pulley, timing kit... Leaving tomorrow to drive it to my sister. They better not hurt this one, or there will be words.

With the dings I've seen on valves from this, I wonder how many have caused a dropped valve. If only this was the only cause of dropped valves :dizzy:

Don't question it, we're living in a different world here. I'm guessing 90% of owners and even more Indy shops know nothing about LOST. When things go wrong most get fixed by the book using the parts that are officially available for the vehicle. Remember, there are no studs available for this vehicle. Check the ARP web site if you don't believe me.

No disrespect to the guys that have pioneered this upgrade but any reputable shop would quite rightly regard using studs designed for a completely different application and using an installation process coming from a bunch of amateurs on an internet forum a hack especially when the correct OE parts and FSM installation instructions are readily available.

Having worked for some different dealerships over the course of many years, I fully understand your statement!
But I fully believe most of the leading contributors on this forum are highly experienced mechanics and / or engineers with many, many years of vehicle repair under our belts and do not make reckless or uninformed choices based on a "bunch of amateurs" as you put it!
Upgrading and /or improvements using non OEM or FSM specified parts or procedures to improve the reliability and longevity of this engine or vehicle are highly calculated decisions based on sound judgement and many years of experience!
Upgrades such as torque converters, in-tank fuel pumps, EGR/EGR cooler & FCV delete, ECM re-flash, boost hoses, V6 air box, all involve non-OEM parts but certainly are great improvements that add to the reliability and longevity of the engine! Along with all the non-OEM aftermarket parts that are available that many have installed. :2cents:

Not so sure about your 90% figure for owners & indies.
4x4 drivers wrench way more than camry cruisers, and LJ is the first -and best- online stop for CRD mechanical research.

Also, when sourcing parts independent shops have latitude where stealerships are obligated to install OEM (=added corporate profit margin). That fact also dis-incentivizes their techs from pursuing non-stock research.

Conversely, indie shops are often reasonable if a customer requests specific parts and/or procedures. They are also (arguably) less arrogant and more interested in expanding their vehicular knowledge base, which could include learning that ARPs are a highly advisable CRD mod.

During a busy month, I surrendered my CRD to an indie shop in Vegas to handle my fan-mods and brakes. All five of their techs had never seen a CRD; when I picked it up they took a break to pepper me with vehicle-specific technical questions, many of which I still hadn't learned answers to. It wouldn't surprise me if one or more of them put a foot forward to learn more about CRD's on their own time.
The owner had performed the post-op road test, and had a fat grin on his face when he declared "Man, for a diesel that thing is incredibly peppy!".
Yup.

I totally agree with you. My previous post is based on experience with and knowing guys who repair vehicles for a living. They just don't have the time or resources to trawl through forums, figure out who the few contributors are that actually know what they're talking about evaluate their solutions and then take the risk of deviating from what the manufacturer has told them to do. Sure, they'll install the parts that owners supply and perform any mods they they request, at their risk, but most will simply fix the vehicle by the book.

Yes true 4x4 owners wrench more than others but the vast majority of KJ owners are not true dedicated 4x4 owners. They simply owns a cute SUV.

Like I said, no disrespect to anyone here. I'm just telling it the way it is.

None taken, and you are dead right!!! Having worked with a bunch of dealership mechanics in the past few years while working in parts, I learned today's dealership mechanics do not deviate from whatever ALLDATA tells them due to dealership liability. Since the dealerships have to underwrite their work and guarantee any and all replacement parts, only OEM parts are used on dealer brand vehicles and big box part store parts on used and non dealership brand vehicles. Dealerships actually get a kickback on OEM part sales and the profit margins are much higher on the OEM parts vs any others...

In fairness within the limits of what they can "legally" do (ex. no shop can "legally" remove a catalytic converter) some dealers are more flexible than others. For example my local DCJ dealer has, I assume they still do, happily installed Suncoast torque converters on Dodge trucks.

Your Dealer is an exception Pap; be very glad they do this!
Back in 2000 when I got ready to install a Suncoast TC in my Dodge Cummins; local CJD dealer told me they would not do it, so I had to go to a transmission shop for Suncoast install.
Service manager at Dodge dealer informed me he was not allowed to use non-Mopar parts period!

A lot of Service Managers at dealerships will not allow customers to supply their own parts!

Dealership did my Timing belt with parts from IDparts. they really did not question it much. when I set up the service I told the manager I had purchased the parts already and didn't find a local indie shop that could do it. they had me bring the Jeep in with the parts and go over what I had with the tech and told me if I was missing anything or something was deemed low quality they would order a replacement and bill it to me. the tech was fine with all the parts and even liked that Graf water pump over oem. not all dealers are about making every last dime on you, this one was fine to just get the work done and make money on that.
