More info please! I can't stand the OEM backup lights and have been trying to figure out what to do to fix them.

everything in the tail lights are LED now

here's a pic with them off, the camera does suck, but they really are as bright as they look, I was shielding my eyes when taking the picture with the reverse lights on :D

a white red and amber per tail light

however

here's the issue list

1. no flasher relay for the main harness - it's integrated into the hazard switch in the dash:

if you get just led turn signals, they will flash rapidly

if you get jsut led stop lamps, your turn signals will flash rapidly if your foot is on the brake

2. you can fix the brake off turn signal issue one of 3 ways
a. 25w 6ohm resistor from L and R turn-signal wires to ground at the tail light or in the tail light harness
b. 25w 6ohm resistor from L and R turn-signal wires to ground in the trailer plug harness
c. quite possible to get a LED flasher and plug it into the trailer harness in the Rt. rear interrior quarter panel - there's 4 of them on the harness

3. once you've put the 6 ohms per side, of resistance back on the turn signals either way you go about doing it, you also need to do the same to the stop lamps
d. what won't work is a fix within the trailer harness - the trailer harness stop lamps is only fed from one stop lamp feed from the main harness
-so either a 12ohm at the junction box or 2 6ohm'ers on the stop lamp wires to the ground

I haven't finished investigating other options for the stop lamp fix

the trigger for the flash fast fault symptom after you've fixed the turn signals is in line with the brake lamp switch not the parking lamps, otherwise it would just require a HD parking lamp relay but they are actually different circuits and different wires all together

I'm 99% sure you can fix the turn signals with HD or LED compat relays installed to the trailer tow relays in the tow harness in the quarter panel

the stop lamps on the other hand from what i've turned up, will require the 25w 6ohm resistors

by the way

I dumped this much effort into finding an appropriate solution to the LED fast flash issue due to the fact that we don't have a flasher relay that we can replace with a LED or HD relay to fix the issue

I don't like using so called led fix resistors because they get just as hot as an incandescent bulb, even the ones with heat sinks, go put your hand on one after using sitting in a traffic jam for awhile - just operating your headlights won't heat them (thank god otherwise they'ed probably catch something on fire..)

for some tarded reason they always make the leaders on the resistors about 2 inches long and you end up wrapping tin foil (SHINEY SIDE OUT) around some harness guard cut about 2-2.5 inches long, and put it around the wires that are between the leaders, then zip tie the 2 resistors to the guard, tape the scotches up real good and secure it to the chassis

for clarification, there is no light out sense that causes a fast flasher symptom for backup lights - since you typically don't use turn signals backing up ;) so there's no reason for the system to tell you that the resistance is lower than it should be, and since the circuit is inactive during all other gears, during that time it doesn't know the resistance is low unless your vehicle has a burnt out light indicator on the dash - do even the newer Libbys even come with those?

so if you want to just do backup lights, all ya gotta do is pull the tail light assembly pop the backup light out and slap the new one in

additionally, with LED licence plate lights if you get that odd strobing or flicker effect (i havent with the unit that I put in) there IS a park lamp relay under the hood that you can upgrade to a HD or LED relay

I guess I should have posted this thread in Electronics, but I didn't intend to start spewing technical stuff

Yarr

i originally ordered the lower LED count bulbs and ended up ordering the 60's and returning the lower led counts

but.. i did test out the lower led count ones first :P out of curiosity

i really didn't see a brightness difference between them in the backup lights being blind is being blind

i did notice a difference in the tail/turn though the lower count LED (20 dollar ones) are more than adequate for the backup lights so like i said, i didn't really see much difference between the 2 led counts when it came to the backup lights either ones you'll get 95-99% of the same result because the lens is clear

and if you decide to just do backup lights you won't have to do any other modification, would be a simple pull and replace

Hey Jarhead,
On this site there are whole bunch of different ones, can you tell us which one did you get?
http://autolumination.com/3157_3156.htm

I have been thinking about adding back-up lights to my bumpers or underneath the bumper to the rear using driving lights, but I thought it would be too much of a job, especially the wiring, so this could be the next best thing. At least if it doesn't work or if it is not bright enough, I can still try to wire backup lights.

Thanks!
