Alright so in my quest for tires, I ran into something I never had to consider, which is the ply of the tire. How low or high is recommended for a DD, but still able to offroad without worrying about ripping them apart? :juggle:

My tires are 10ply(actual ply's) and 6ply rated they are load range "C".Personally I wouldn't run anything less then a load range "C" LT tire on a Jeep,I had very good results with load range "D" and "E" MT tires before the SFA swap.

I like my c's they stiffened up the ride a little too. This is in comparison to the p rated garbage that was on it when I bought it

Theoretically, a load range "E" tire will be stronger and resist puncture better offroad because of the extra layers.

Having said that...an "E" tire is WAY overkill for a Jeep. It's like putting a Corvette Z06 engine on a lawn tractor. The weight will kill your fuel economy and power, the stiffness will ride choppy and rough (there will be guys who say this isn't true), the tire won't conform to stumps and rocks and obstacles as well, and it's just too much tire in general.

I am running "P" rated tires. They are tough as nails, have rim protectors, and will carry a 2,400 lb. load each which is way more than the Jeep will EVER need....and my ride quality is good and weight isn't horrible.

If you insist on a "LT" (light truck) tire for whatever reason... try to stick with "C" and no more than "D" if you must. "E" rated tires are intended for 3500 series full size trucks that weigh 7,000 lbs. empty and many tons loaded.

You know that "P" stands for "passenger car" right? And will only ever have no more then 2 ply sidewalls, most are only 1 ply sidewall. Most LT tires now have 3 ply sidewalls, much more durable, even in a "C" load rating.

Sure a "E" rated tire will be a bit stiff at 1st,but after a few break in miles they will conform just right for offroading and will give a better on road handling then a mushy "P" rated tire will.

like night and day!

my E's might be loud due to tread design, but they ride just as good as the P's i had.. except my Jeep doesn't wallow going down the road due to paper thin sidewalls

i totally agree about the heaviness though, between the tread design and the weight i lost a mpg or two

Here we go again. I must say...out of ALL the Jeep and fullsize truck forums I'm a member of...this is the only one where guys think they need "E" rated tires. It's actually kind of funny. :)

I swear every question I ask sparks a dispute. Oh well though. In reference to the P rated tires, have you ever been offroad with them? I know C, D, and E have all been out there but I can't think of anyone bragging out their P rated ripping up trails and not their tires. Just looking for feedback, not judging. :P

I have a noticable change in the feel of the jeep when I am running the lighter duty 265/70's versus the e-rated MT/R's. The fuel economy is also noticably better with the 265's. However, when playing I prefer the MT/R's as I have seen way too many tires ruined with sidewall damage. Be it the e-rating or the MT/R's rep, they give me peace of mind. Your mileage may vary...

I haven't run C's or D's on mine

but you can run wallowy P rated tires all you want, it's your vehicle, and your opinion

my P rated i could grab my rear tail light guard and shake my jeep with no effort, and it would wallow left and right about one to two inches due to the weak sidewalls for a 5k+ lb vehicle

yes, E's an overkill, but a P.. the P's were wallowy before I did anything what so ever to the vehicle and I got sick of feeling like i was drifting anytime the wind would blow while going down the highway

Next time i put my P's on the jeep, i'll shake it before and after and video tape it

12,168 lbs. That's how much 4 "E" tires are designed to support. No joke. Do you need that on a Jeep that weighs 1/3 of that amount??

I have wheeled P, C, D, E pretty much whatever is on the market. I've owned everything from compact Wranglers to full size 4-door pickups. I've towed everything from lawn tractors to 28,000 lb. heavy equipment. I've wheeled in rocks, mud, stumps, water, snow, ice, sand, etc. And I'm telling you...these current "P" tires I'm running are NOT mushy at all. I'd put them up against any "E" tire on the market in the rocks and stumps offroad. Very rugged tires. And they handle every 6,500 lb. trailer I'm throwing at them right now. A Jeep is a passenger vehicle, and it just so happens that "P" stands for Passenger Vehicle... so that's why they are on here.

I think the ride quality is great, the cornering is excellent, and the traction is phenomenal. The hundreds of thousands of miles people at tirerack.com have put on them with VERY positive ratings would agree with me. I could have bought this same tire in a 245/75 "E" rating... but why?

You can buy whatever you want. All I'm saying is you have to be careful listening to some people. They think a 1-ton pickup truck tire is what they've got to have on a compact Jeep. They think 50-60 psi is what they need to run down the highway. It's downright comical around here sometimes. I love you guys.. and this board is an excellent resource. But geez..

Come on out,I'll guarantee your tires will not last one trail compared to my LT tires.I'll even give you a advantage and only pit "C" range tires against them, and I have over 1000lbs more weight then you do also.

Uhhmmm - I've killed sidewalls on E rated tires too.

and I think Pablo did some serious trails with P rated Revo's

although the Stock p rated tires - picked up holes driving across a gravel parking lot......

Sidewall ply's are not the only factor to consider.

Yes, and I meant it.

The last tire I cut on the trail (less than a year ago) was a... LT tire! It was a load range "C"...but still...it was so heavy on that steel wheel that the combo was VERY hard to change on the trail too. I'll bet that 31" tire and wheel weighed 85 or 90 lbs. Changing that on the trail sucked.

Now I'm rocking "P" tires and I've never had a flat with these Generals nor the previous set I ran on the other KJ. I also ran "P" tires on my Ram 1500 that weighed nearly 6,000 lbs. with me in it...and hauled and towed with it...and never had a flat or any other issues.

Just curious: You say you run mud in those General A/T's, yet I find the even Mt/R's to be less than ideal in mud. Yet they are seriously better than A/T's. Perhaps what one expects from one's tires is what matters, not what one's tires can actually do? I know people who have posted about being satisfied with the SR/A's.... Just sayin'...

What happens also in say with regards to what ply they run is what they get used to. Most do not have 4 sets of tires/wheels sitting in the garage to do instant comparisons. I have done something similar though with having stock wheels with 255-70-16 P rated yes I had one set, Moabs with MTRs mounted and then an hour later having the MOABs with 265-70 BFGATs mounted, You could tell a huge no HUGE difference with the MTRs on, took longer to take off, longer to stop, more power on the road to remain at a constant speed. Now of course off road the MTRs won.
It also depends on where you live and where you will be driving on a daily basis.
If i lived out near Troy I would certainly look at tires way different than what I do now since Ohio does not have the terrain that Troy gets to enjoy. Same if i lived in say Florida or any of the coastal areas.
