Had to add this one since I went out to the Rolls today (9/10/05). I was amazed at what a stock KJ was able to do :D

Hey Sapien, you might know the area. That shot was taken out at the dunes south of I-40 on the edge of the Rio Puerco valley, sunset looking toward Mt. Taylor (you can just make it out in front of the grille). I did some editing to give it that 35-millimeter close-focus look...

No worries, I have it saved on CD. I've even thought about sending it in for the calendar...

Hey, Me, Eddo, and TheChucklesStart went Jeeping in the Puerco just last saturday... That doesn't look like a familiar area to me though...

If you pass through again we should go jeeping...

I think you guys were out on the north side of I-40 last weekend. There are two easy ways to get out where this picture was taken.
#1) go south on Coors rd to Pajarito and turn left, then keep going west past all the Dan'l Boone-type pioneers living out on the west mesa. Eventually you'll come to the dunes, they're about 4-5 miles out.
#2) go out to Paseo Del Volcan and turn south. Follow the pavement until it makes a left turn; just after the turn you can go south again along the powerline road. Go out until the fence on your right ends and make a right turn, then go west until you can't go any more. You'll be going just south of the new jail out on the west side. If I get up there sometime soon I'll run out with my GPS and get a track that I can put on a map for ya... I used to go out there with my '88 Pathfinder and go dune-runnin' all the time.

Thank you very much for the compliment - I just wanted to see what I could do with my image processing software. I was also racing to get out to the site in time that day so I could have a little bit of sunset to take pictures with (actually I had wanted to get out there just before sunset, but missed it).

Thanks for the compliments everyone. If anyone has a nice picture that they would like *tweaked* like mine let me know. It took me about an hour to do mine, a bit less now probably since it was a learning experience. Drop me a note and I can get you my direct e-mail addy to send pictures to (I know, I may be opening myself up for an overflowing mailbox, but I'll try).

Can we see the before pictures? Myself, I think it'd be kinda cool to see how much work must have went into them to look that good. Nice work by the way!

Sure thing Nanette. Here are smaller versions of the raw images I made the first two from:
Image

Image
What I did on the first one was to make two layers, one blurred and one with a slight increase in sharpness, then blended the two together so to get the out-of-focus look to the background. On the second one I did much the same, but I also made the blurred image black-and-white and then did the blend. The software I am running is The Gimp 2.2 which is an open-source program that is really spiffy (yes, I said spiffy :P ). I just kinda tinker with these things when the mood strikes me. Heres another one I cobbled together this last weekend. Boldly going where no Jeep has gone before:

Putting on my tin-foil hat

Dude, everybody could see this photo is fake just like the fake NASA moon landing pics. You only have to look at the shadows and you'll know it's fake. The shadows on the rocks indicate light source coming from the upper left corner of the frame, but the shadow on this lunar vehicle indicate the light source coming from the top right corner of the frame.

Fake picture, I tell you.
