Regearing will improve your gas mileage, you will never "get it back".

And just to give you my mileage: 17-19 mpg stock tires, 13-15 mpg 31" MTRs.

Let's not forget the 02-03's have the smaller 18.5 gallon tank, the 04's got a 19.5 gallong tank, and now the 05-06's use a 20.5 gallon tank.

let's also not forget that tank size has nothing to do with miles per gallon... only miles per tank.

I don't think the thread starter ever mentioned his MPG (if I missed it I'm sorry, I just skimmed). He did say he only got 180 miles per tank.

Any idea what it might cost to change the gears over to 4.10?
Thanks

cupla hundred for each set of gears plus a cupla hundred for each install..
(back in the early '90's when I had some 4.56's installed in my Samurai it came to over 1,000.00..)

and then , of course, while you are in there you might as well go
ahead and install any lockers you may have been thinking about..

Well for the front will run between $400-$1450(depending on if you get just gears, used 4-clinder KJ dana30a,or new dana30a) and the rears are around $200.Then you have to add install and install kits(new bearings and seals, between $30-$100) if you are not installing them yourself, and most places I've been to will charge between $200-$350 per axle. Also if swapping gears it's a good time to add any lockers/LSD's and they most likely wont charge extra(air lockers and electric lockers excluded). You may get by cheaper on the gears but these prices is what I've seen so far.

Well then if you are saying the 2002 tank is 18.5 gallons then I am getting 9.72 MPG at present. If I take into account
the wheel size and add 3 % it is 10 MPG, still pretty poor . Even stock wheels was only getting me 15 MPG ,so I've gone
from ridiculous to absurd , no big deal .

I live in an area that is very mountainous which I think is part of the problem. I go through a lot of gas and at least one brake change per year .

So... Is anyone running 245/75/16s with a manual transmission and 2.5" lift? If so, what is your mileage?

The Negatives Losses:

Lose some acceleration...Lose some MPG's...Lose some on road handling...

The Positives Losses:

Lose the fear of curbs...Lose the Blinding Glare of oncoming High Beams...Lose all your Short Friends...

FUNNY ! I personally cannot complain of handling losses other than not being able to make full stop turns without getting a little rubbing . I think the Skyjacker ride is equil too if not better than stock. I like a firm feel personally .
