Anyone have a Yakima roof rack?

Trying to figure out how to haul my bikes. The CRD I'm looking at doesn't have a tow hitch and I'd rather throw them on the roof anyway (with the help of a ladder, I assume).

You don't have a OEM roof rack? Didn't know the CRD's could be had without them. It's cheaper and easier for rear mount, unless you are towing or in and out of the back end a lot.

I have a Yakima roof rack for skis. It's pretty tall to get up there. W/ my Subaru WRX I could access the rack from the ground. W/ the Libby I had to buy the Mopar side steps (make sure you get the steps and not the "rails"). But w/ those it works fine. I can give you the part #'s for the towers and crossbars if you want.

If you decide to go hitch mount make sure the rack clears the spare tire. The factory hitch is recessed pretty far under the truck and my Yakima hitch rack was too short to clear the spare tire (I had a hitch rack for my Wrangler before I bought the WRX). Roof rack works well and allows you access to the rear cargo compartment.

The CRD has the side rails and I just called my bike shop and he said Yakima makes a mount that goes on the rails. I assume I could use my Yakima cross bars then. Thanks.

I have thule racks with canoe mounts. They work fine, but I got the longer bar (58"?) so there would be room to tie in other equip as canoe would take up all standard crossbar. Thules can be found on web in a number of places and they often have "sales".

Regarding steps to reach the Liberty roof racks, I bought a tire step off ebay (item # for same seller and same item is 4549440121) to assist my Mopar Steps. It arrived quickly and seems to be quite nice. The tire width can be adjusted (3 positions, I think) and the step height can be adjusted (just 2 positions, but don't have it with me). There are others but the adjustability was the selling point for me, and it appeared to be the toughest/strongest.

Comes with a pleather bag for storage with handles. Money well spent, assuming it hangs well with the Steps and supports my weight like I believe it should from handling it.

I haven't had me CRD since it arrived so it is sitting idle in the Laundry Room. Hope to be able to test fit the Steps and the Tire Step tonight. I am out of town most of the next two weeks so I may not get back to post, but remind me and I will eventually.

I ride a recumbent so the roof rack is ususally more expensive.

I added a rear hitch from etrailer.

My hitch bike rack fits fine behind the spare tire.

A better arrangement for MPG when I tranport it to Myrtle Beach or Ragbrai.

I moved a 48" Yakima to my Liberty from a previous car using the Yakima Lowrider mounts. Works great but 48" in the minimum width. I don't travel with my bikes there though a s it is too tall for me. I have a Thule 4 bike hitch mount. It will not allow the gate to swing very far open without and adapter though as the tire interfers. Others like the 2 bike spare tire mount.

I also have a yakima rack with 48" bars, doublecross mounts, boa bike mounts, 38" fairing, and a basket case. I would not reccomend the boa bike mounts. The bars can't be mounted far enough apart for a xxl bike. They do work but not as well as I would like them too. Another note on the basket case, it mounts on top of the bars, which isn't the most aerodynamic way to do it. I think it is the best looking rack out there.

Look at Saris racks I think they are sturdier than Thules. I have has Saris load bars for years and they hold up weel and easy to make your own custom mounting. The Talon model comes with locks and is easy to put on and remove.

Yakima lowrider clamps and 48" cross bars work. We had an old Yakima rim rack for the rear hitch that required a 7 inch hitch extension to clear the spare. Unfortuantely, you can't open the rear gate all the way with it on.

I'll have to pop in at the local bike shop and see what solutions they have. I have a Yakima, so I can use the rods and maybe just buy mounts. I'd like to see the ladder/step thingy and I'll do a search.

Check out eBay for doublecross mounts. They are the predecessors to the lowriders. Look fine to me. They were new and $75 shipped.

Anyone have a Yakima roof rack?
