Dean I know what your thinking and the answer is NO I will not be counted as a "child"! As far as the room situation goes, it depends on how many people plan to come down with me. I will need one room for myself (or if I'm lucky enough to have a girlfriend again!).

Actually, what I'm thinking is, "What a bunch of wussies!! Staying in a beach house instead of fighting of tropical storm winds, skin ripping plants, and credit card hording crickets!"

Well, you guys look into it. There's a pretty good sized group going. Someone has to be brave enough to use their credit card to put down a deposit and collect money from everyone.

Just a thought. If you have it at Nags Head, that means we have to drive all the way down to the end of the island and catch the ferry about 2 hours earlier than being in Frisco. However, having the final and starting place near the bridge is a plus.

Ok.. I called one place up there.. They can't make reservations until 30 days before hand if it is a weekend rental only.. I am still looking around..

Mutt - Since you are in that area.. If you can get me some info on rentals, that would be great.. Maybe you know someone or something that could help out with this..

For the Group - I would like to get an official head count by Sept 1st if possible.. So when I do the reservations I can give them the info..

Also.. I will put the deposit down on my credit card... :D

Ben already found something that I was going to bring up: These big house rentals don't do one-night rentals, only weekly or full weekends. So are we talking about trying to rent a place for Friday and Saturday nights? That's cool with me if we are, just trying to figure out what we're doing so I can tell my bro and our friend down in Ocracoke.

Put me, my wife, and my brother's family on the guaranteed list. We'll be there no matter what.

Here are a few links to check out in our search.

Yeah.. We are running into the "We only rent for either a week or 3 days minimum" spew... My wife did find a Ramada Hotel that will accept animals and gave us a group rate.. It seems the problem is that since it is Columbus Day Weekend.. They are really busy that time of the year...

I was afraid of that. We rent a place at least once a year for a big family gathering and they have never waved the 3 day minimum stay rule. It takes them almost a whole day to clean one of those places, so it's negative ROI to rent it out for only a day or two.

So where's that Ramada, Ben? It being Columbus Day weekend (I didn't even realize), we'd better get our lodging reservations tied down pretty early, regardless of if we're hoteling or camping.

Does that Ramada have a bar??? :D

Uh, camping won't fill up.
Not too many people can handle a cold shower in October.

Have we decided on accommodations yet? Just wondering.. If we decided on a hotel, we are running out of time.. Just wondering...

Thanks,

I bet there will be openings at the hotels on Hatteras or Nags Head.

My backup is still to camp. But, if you guys pick a inexpensive place in Nags Head, that would be fine with me.

Yea, I'm gonna beg that we find something a bit cheaper than that. I'd be looking at $155/night to face the beach. Unless they charge $20 PER dog, then I'd be looking at $175/night. That's $350 just for lodging if we stay Friday and Saturday nights. Besides, if you go online and reserve a room, it's the same prices. They're not offering any kind of group discount other than to waive the safe fee, which they are all required to waive if you don't use the safe anyway.

Camping is my backup too. But we oughta be able to find something lower than $99/night since we'll be there after Labor Day. I have sent a couple email requests to a couple places I found online. I'll keep everyone posted on the rates and discounts available. Hey, one of the hotels has lighted fish cleaning tables in EACH room! Ha!

What are everyone's thoughts about staying a hotel on Ocracoke? There are a couple over there.

My only issue with staying at any place past Hatteras is that we will end the day up at Nags Head and that it will take that much longer to get to the southern end of the islands. I plan on leaving right after work and not taking Friday off, so I would still arrive between 10 and midnight.

It doesn't have to be on the beach. We'll be driving on the beach all weekend.

Yepper, I'm game for camping. $99 buys alot of rum and coke. How about the campground we stayed at last year? It had camping cabins and, rv sites and tent sites. Plus it isn't to far from the Ferry.

Well, I haven't found anyone that'll give any kind of group discount. $90/night is the cheapest I've found and, like Mike said, that buys a lot of cheap rum and diet Coke (okay, I added the "cheap" and "diet" part).

Anyway, I'm back to camping too. What campground did you all stay at last year?

Richard and I stayed at the Frisco National Park Campground the first night.
The group stayed at some small cabin camp ground up the street the second night.

I hope you ment "staying" as in that we couldent pitch our tents and had to stay in the Jeep's. All in all, I dont mind camping or staying in a hotel.

The small cabin campground sounds kinda cool too. Anyone remember what it was called?

Important info on the campsites. Sounds like my brother's family and mine could stay at the same campsite to save money (or conserve space) if need be.

SITE: No more than two vehicles (pop-up camper is considered a vehicle) and six persons may occupy a single site. Parking space for extra vehicles is severely limited, so please plan accordingly. If you must bring more than two vehicles, we recommend you make arrangements to park your extra vehicle outside the park or rent an extra campsite.

Pet Policy: Dogs, cats, or other pets are prohibited throughout the park unless crated, caged, on a six-foot leash, or otherwise under physical restraint. Pets are prohibited on designated swimming beaches. Pets running at large will be apprehended and returned to their owner, if known and located, or delivered to the local animal shelter for disposal in accordance with local procedures. Guide dogs for the visually impaired are permitted to remain with their owners at all times.
