my mileage is great i have nothing to complain about, i have 18,000 miles on my jeep right now and at 50mph(set the cruise on flat ground) i am getting 38-40mpg, according to the onboard computer. before i got the k&n and the magnaflow i was getting about 34-36mpg. i live in ohio and i drove my jeep to florida and was getting about 28mpg at 65-80mph,fully loaded with 4 guys and all our luggage for a week, and that was before the air filter and exhaust mods.if you wanna improve you gas mileage spend the money and get the k&n filter, i noticed a 3-4mpg increase when i put mine in, it is definetly worth it. you can get them at your local auto zone, or auto parts store, if you can't find one specifically for the diesel, it uses the same size as the 3.7L. piece of cake.

Just filled my 2cd tank. I got 19.6 while the computer was saying 21. But I really never went over 55mph so I know it can get better.

What PSI should my tires be cold? The car says they are all 32psi in the morning before I do any driving. Is this ok?

That is the low limit, I run them at 38 psi for daily in town use and short highway trip that it might make once every couple of months.

I could well be related to fuel pressure but if I was to hazard a guess it could be that those of us with low fuel economy have our operating specs on the low end of what ever has an adverse impact on fuel economy. It might be that our fuel pressure, valve timing, and crank position signal are ALL on the low end, but still in the operating window. Because everything is within spec the dealer won't fix it. Actually it would be next to impossible for the delaer to get STAR to authorize the parts if everything is in spec.
Wrong answer, the MPG's are not in spec. That negates the nothing covered rotuine.

Help me out on this one ON, my city driving is 20.5mpg vs. an EPA estimate of 21mpg and my all highway trip was ~26mpg vs an EPA estimate of 27mpg. Since the EPA estimates are estimates - not specs - how would I have a leg to stand on in the eyes of the dealer and STAR? Don't get me wrong, when I have the time and resources I'll start looking into it myself, but it would be much easier and cheaper if I could get DC to fix it for me. I'm sure if a definative answer could be found there would be a lot of happy drivers here!

When I put a K&N air filter on my TDI, my fuel economy dropped 2mpg

I just finished a 700 mile all highway trip and although I did get better than my usual 20.5 mpg, my actual mileage for the trip was 25.9 mpg. Speed was 65 - 67 mph most of the way dropping to 60 mph in some areas, my tires were at 36 - 37 psi cold, new air filter, just changed rear axel fluid as well as xfer case fluid. The diesel down here in the Houston area has to conform to TX-LED so it has a minimum cetane of 48. The last batch I tested was 53, but there is no telling what the fuel quality was in Denton where I topped off at. My rig has over 13k on the odometer so I don't expect any big increase from continued break in. I think the only way I can get near 30 mpg will be to change the muffler and/or exhaust, fill up with VW 506.01 oil, and find a way to play with the injection timing. Also driving on flat surfaces on a cool day with no AC on and no wind will also help. Good luck in your quest.

Did I miss something here? I was I thought talking to someone who could not get above 19 or 20 mpg, you are in the normal zone with the 20/26 mpg's as my window sticker listed highway mileage as 26 to 28 mpg's. There may be suttle differences in our travel routes such as alititude, weather, fuel or the vehicle that made mine do so much better then yours. Just remember these engines increase mpg's as break happens. On some it seems to take 20,000 miles or more, but I have often figured that increases after 10k to 15 k miles was because that was the learning curve of the driver/owner of the vehicle.

Your mention of VW 506.01 oil makes me wonder what oil you are using. A true synthetic Class IV or V oil such as Mobil 1 0w-40/5w-40 or something else that is not a true synthetic and not quite as slippery as some would say.

If you are not happy with 26 mpg's highway on a 4300 lb 4x4 SUV you're a sick puppy.

Sick puppy?!?!?!

I certainly represent that remark! :D

My original post was in reference to one of yours mentioning acheiving 30mpg. I am currently using Mobil 1 0w-40 becuase I could not find the new M1 Turbo Diesel formula 5w-40. Of course, after I changed oil I saw the new formula at the locally O'Rielly Auto Parts! I think I'll do the exhaust first followed by the 506.01 oil since I've stocked up on it. The only reason I don't use a MB 229.51 is because I have a VW PD TDI and I use 506.01 in it. I also ordered a crank position sensor to see if I can play with it to advance the injection timing. What I need to do is get a FSM in order to understand the way the fuel injection system maintains and measures fuel rail pressure.

Have a good weekend!

I just hit 24,000 miles on the CRD. Here is a few numbers on my last couple of tanks. Filled up by interstate an got 29.5mpg driving between 65mph to 70mph on a 80 mile trip. Drove about 10% city and got 24.5mpg going between 70mpg and 75mph on a 150 mile trip.

I think my EVIC is screwed up. I have to be getting great mileage.

I drove my sister's Renegade for a little bit today.... oh boy I forgot what it was like to have a fuel gauge move like that. I'll do the hand calculation tomorrow when I fill up. It won't be much of a fillup, but enough to calculate mileage.

My dad just phoned me. With a bit over 1000 miles on the CRD, he got 26.2 mpg driving from Missoula, MT to Wenatchee, WA. Most of the driving was in the 70-75 ranges on Interstate with posted limits of 70 (In Montana, the cruise was set in the higher 70's to avoid being rear-ended by Montana natives  ). I think that's reasonable for a relatively "green" (low mileage) CRD.

Offroadsubaru,

Your dad did well with so few breakin miles and going from about 700' over several mountain passes.

Reggie,

You don't talk about the miles on your CRD but as Oldnavy says, you are well within the range. You should never expect regular 30 MPG out of your CRD but you should get it, depending on the trip and your driving style.

05kjturbo,

Simply amazing. I can't see how you could do that in the under 50 MPH range. We need to know more!

I just returned from a Spokane/Olympia/Portland/Spokane trip that was perhaps 60% Interstate, 30% state highway, and 10% city. On arrival at Portland I clocked 30.21 MPG with odometer error adjustment. I got 29.68 overall. The high mileage on the return was noted at the Vernita bridge at 30.42. I had a head wind over and a tail wind on return. I don't think there is as much of an advantage to the tail wind as there is disadvantage from the head wind. I did learn that you can put 21.66 gallons into the 2.5 gal fuel tank!

Your new engine is still to TIGHT (Not broken in yet). As it breaks in, it will get better MPG.

I was getting about 15MPG up until about 500 Miles. That sucked... guzzled more diesel than my 3.7L sucked gas!

Yea, mine too!

My 3.7 gasser gets around 22MPG Highway. 8)

Sure glad our CRD ain't that fuel thirsty, that would suck. That is why we didn't want a gasser. :)

We are averaging 21/22 city short trips and never above 35 MPH, highway cruising 68 to 72 mph we get 32 to 34 mpg range now. Sure is fun to drive 600 miles on the interstate without needing a fuel stop. 8)

I did a longer trip this weekend. I am just over 1100 miles on the CRD now. Used about a b30 blend. Averaged 28.2 mpg on a mostly highway trip of about 400 miles. Hauled a kayak on the roof, one other passenger, and a 24000 btu a/c unit in the back. I am very pleased with that mileage.

A friend that is a quadraplegic told me about an adaptor with tube to bag, may have to try that on next trip. But heck I have to stop about once an hour to get out and walk around or charlie horses will rule the night as the did on first long trim in the CRD.

May have to get a Sprinter conversion van (class C coach) and have my own whiz bang with me, hate those public john's.
