I'll second that motion. I'm paying more for insurance every six months than what the one-time price of a Provent is.
That said, I'm not knocking those who try the elephant hose mod or other homemade filters. If you don't have the bucks for a Provent and have the parts for a homemade device on hand, by all means give it a try. IMHO, the worst choice is leaving the CCV as-is and doing nothing.
But again, you do need to take the possibility of freezing/plugging seriously. The repair bill for a set of blown seals will make the cost of a Provent look like peanuts.
