Several years ago this was hottly debated. I did some research and I reached the conclusion that it depends on the type of spacer. The only ones I'd use (and I do) are SpiderTrax type. Solid billet aluminum with new studs set in. For the Libby they are 1.25 inches (but often called 1 inch spacers)

Other types of spacers eat up bolt length so you don't get solid lock down with the lug nuts. If the spacers are contoured at all or too thin they can break. Cast spacers aren't strong enough and can break. Using stud extenders is not a good idea. The studs can bend or fail. Any time the lug nuts loosen they can come off or the lugs can be sheared off setting the wheel free.

an even cheaper route than them spacers are some new rims. I got the cragar soft 8s with 4" backspacing for only bout 47 bucks a peice . They will make your tires stick out 1.5" wider on each side as opposed to the stock rims. Just a thought for ya. Save you some money and give your rig a bad stupid new look!!! 8)

Just an FYI, anytime you alter the stock offset you can and will cause additional stress/wear and tear on your front end components, namely the ball joints. If you look at the spindle as a lever, with the wheel being an extension of it, the wider the tire and the farther out from center you go, the more leverage it has against the control arms. The long and short of it, don't be surprised if things wear out and fail faster.

I've had Spidertrax 1.25" WHS-002 spacers on for 9 months now with absolutely no problems. Using spacers isn't any harder on the suspension than using a wheel with 1.25" less backspacing, same leverage. I agree, it's probably cheaper just to get new rims, but I like my Renegade wheels 8)

FYI, Wheelspacers bigger than 1/4 inch are illegal in PA.

Hey, does anyone know about wheel spacer legality in Virginia? I read through the safety inspection list and there was nothing mentioned about wheel spacers; I have my safety inspection in a week or so. Do they keep a national log of vehicle failures? For instance, if I fail at one place can I go to another and get passed there or will they know via some sort of database to check for wheel spacers on my vehicle?

I have run spacers on my KJ. I have 1/2" on the front and 3/8" on the rear. They are just cheapy universals. Solid aluminum with holes for the lug nuts. There is still more than enough threading for the nuts to be and stay tightened. I picked them up for about $8 a piece at a local automotive store. Cheap fix!
