Since the tire isn't on the back anymore, it looks from the photos like the entire back is going to lift up as one. Like a minivan.

I'd like to see a rear hatch like the honda element. The top 2/3rs swings up like the flipper glass we have, but the bottom third opens out into a functional tailgate. Jeeps are supposed to be all about function, and how much more function can you get than a built-in tailgate seat with the door overhang above you to keep off sun+rain?

The rear looks like the Saturn SUV! I give it a negative vote. I prefer the spare on the back. For those that say they can't fit the big tire on the back, you won't be able to fit a bigger tire down below either. Putting the tire up top creates more wind resistance, top heavy, and takes away cargo space. Tire below will also be at risk of damage. You also have to drag it out from underneath when you need it, then pick it up.

I thnk this idea was created to help those mall-shopping, grocery-getting, soccer moms. They probably had trouble pulling off the spare (weaklings) and carrying it to the ground or dropping it on their pumps (shoes).

The rear window DOES open up separately from the gate. The gate DOES flip up like many other SUV's and minivans.

Would be interesting if someone made the rear drop down like a pickup's tailgate and give you the option to open up like the current KJ. Dual opening option. With a drop down, you could carry long equipment/items like a pickup. I just discovered that the front passenger seat does not flip forward very far. Barely at all.

Whatever happened to the Gladiator?

Well, I guess there is a little more difference to the 08 Liberty compared to the Nitro. Looks like the Liberty is more square.

But, I still don't like the spare being below and I prefer my curvy engine hood. I'll welcome the new KK owners to the Liberty forum, but I will probably be keeping the KJ for a while longer.

It almost looks like they were trying to marry the Nitro and the H2, but in a Libby sized package........Still not sure if I like it, though. Right now, I'd have to say NO.

20 bucks says once you see the new KK in person and gander its long list of new features, you're going to change your mind...

I don't know about that. You can cram as many features as you want into a crappy looking package and I still won't bite. I thought the Chevy Avalanche had a lot of features, but I couldn't get over the look of the vehicle (let alone other issues - like V8 gas mileage for one).

I'd say on first impressions - I'm not a fan.

I agree with those who don't like the fact that the spare tire is not on the back. I think the spare tire on the back adds to the sport utility look of the vehicle. I was grateful that is was located on the back when it came time to actually use the spare. It made the experience much more tolerable.

As for the headlights - nope - I don't think I like those either. They look confused - as if a decision couldn't be made to go with either the round or squared look (same thing as with the Commander) so they punted and came up with some type of sensored word amalgamation. I think this version betrays the signature "round" look that the current Liberty pays homage to so well. The front view of the current Liberty looks like a jeep. The squared look/period that Jeep went through (as did others) smacks of the 70's and 80's squared confusion (squared headlights, squared everything). Maybe the squared look was just easier for the drafters. All I know is that I didn't care for it too much - the signature round headlights look much better in my opinion.

Oh ya... and one other thing about that headlight assembly. One can only hope that the bottom light is part of the high-beam setup and not the fog light. I don’t really care for the new fog light location on the current '05 and '06 models. The fogs are too high and less effective than on the earlier versions. They've seemed to become more ornamental than functional.

I prefer to start with a Jeep that looks good and then work from there; just about any feature you could possibly want could be added to the current Liberty. I find that the factory "features" just end up being replaced by my more functional toys  For instance, buying the Renegade, I'm going to eventually end up replacing the skids, fog lights, and taillight guards. I've already replaced most of the "premium" sound system. My brother just got a Wrangler Sport instead of the Rubicon because he would have just put new wheels, tires, and lockers on it anyways.

I wish some new SUV would come out with a split tailgate like trucks have (or like my old land cruiser). This was nice on my landcruiser because you had an excellent place for lunch halfway through the day with a little shade, where as on my jeep, I have to move my gear to sit in the back.

I also like the curves of the 2002-2004 liberties over the 2005-2007 liberties, so I don't think I like the direction jeep is taking with the looks of the off-road vehicles, but then again, I won't be in the market for a new vehicle until the jeep is in pieces (preferably from many years of use).

I personally don't care where they put the spare, it is always in the way were ever it goes. Well, as long as they don't put in under the floor in the back area (like in car trunks), were they are not in the way but they are hard to because of gear.

I do hope they keep many of the same parts in the new Liberty so that we will continue to have aftermarket parts made for our liberties.

I think that the new liberty will look great with three letters on the back.

The CRD was dropped for the 2007 model year, not permanently. That was because the engine would not have met the new stricter emissions standards that go into effect in calendar year 2007, and because it would not have been cost-effective to put the upcoming new CRD engine into the Liberty for half of a model year. A brand new CRD engine will debut in the 2007 Grand Cherokee and 2007 Commander and models with these engines start production in January. Depending on the sales success of the CRD in these other Jeeps the CRD may certainly find its way back into the Liberty in the 2008/09 models.

Great photo,, nice find!

I dont think i'll be getting another Liberty/KJ after this one. I've had 2 TJ's & 2 KJ's so it looks like i'm going to have to find another Jeep to fall in love with.
Considering i'll have a family for the next Jeep (& this one!) i'm most likely going to upgrade to a CRD LTD COMMANDER, but only after its been fitted ex-dealer with the 3-4" Lift & 33's ;)

It's hard to make any real judgement about the styling of a truck that is effectively covered, but I do like the boxy overall theme. My guess is that the look will definately not sit well with people who purchased their liberty for the curvy look, but I definately dig the boxier look. I like the new look of the headlights as well.

Any way you slice it those are the Jeep owners that will be comming to this site and wheeling with us on the trails.

There was almost nothing nice said about our KJ's when they were comming off the production line and now not alot positive being said about the new Liberty.

Wally said it best:

Quote:
We as a community here who all love our Jeeps, probably shouldn't be bagging on the newer Jeeps coming out, Especially if they wil carry the name Liberty...its ok to have an opinion of what you like and dislike, but heres one thing to remember..the people who buy the late model Libbys are going to be looking for a forum to come to, and guess what?..it should be here, and if history repeats itself and usually does..I would bet some people here are going to trade in their old ones for new ones and they will be coming to this forum with ideas, questions, and other info, we should welcome anyone who has a Jeep Vehicle thats looking for a great forum to come to, and not bash anyone for what they drive...at least they are active and hopefully wheeling whatever they buy, and remember, there are alot of manufacturers, Jeep Engineers, and magazine people who come to this forum..we have a great community here thats always been helpful with the Liberty owners..we just need to remember that and keep that going...thats what makes this forum so great...see ya...Wally

As long as it has the same front suspension and eventually the same CRD engine I really dont care much of what it looks like. If it can help spur the aftermarket for us I will be happy. Oh and did anyone else notice that those photos it looks like the rear fender flares are not in place. Go look at your liberty and imagine it without flares, ugly..
