My 2003 Dodge RAM 2500 CTD (305/555) does not turn the oil as black in 6k miles as my CRD does in 1k miles......the multiple injection events and EGR turn the oil black much more quickly.

I hear the oil can tolerate a 12,000 mile interval but rumor is that the filter is only good for about 5,000. I haven't had the dealership use anything particular, oil or filter, but mostly because I have had other issues in life (and the TC and EGR) that have been higher priority but I have maintained about a 9,000 mile interval. Maybe a better filter will bring my safety factor closer to the 12,000 mile mark.

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated, as always.
