Has anyone come up with a "good" location to install a transmission temp probe? Maybe an inline unit on the temp cooler lines going to the cooler?

If you replace the pan with one from PML you can option a threaded hole for temp probe, but
then you have to factor in the skid plates. One modification impacts the other.

Another option would be to install an aftermarket drain plug kit in the existing pan. If you replace the plastic sealing washers with copper, they work pretty well. You might have to drill and tap to a different size for a temp probe, but other than that it would be easy. As long as you don't mind dropping the pan that is.

Couldn't you just put one in a tee at the tranny cooler inlet?

Westach makes a temp gauge that uses a dipstick sender. I've been toying with that idea. Here is the link:

http://www.genosgarage.com/prodinfo.asp ... =WM-TMP-DS

And here is a picture of the dipstick sender.

http://www.genosgarage.com/prodinfo.asp ... -SENSOR-DS

I'm just not sure how accurate the dipstick sender would be.

I think I read my 06 crd has a message on the speedometer indicating overheated transmission fluid. If that's the case then the sensor is already on our CRD's and all we need do is to monitor it. For VW's there is a program and inerterface called VAG-COM where you can monitor many variables including transmission fluid even on my 14 year old 93 Eurovan.

I believe that the best place for the temperature sensor is after the trans cooler or the return line to the transmission. I have a B&M trans temp gauge and that is how mine is installed. I have spoken with several companies in regards to this issue. Some of which are: B&M, Auto Meter, and Bell Transmission Products or BTP Racing. The mechanic who installed mine told me that the temperature reading will be much more accurate and is less work then that of a probe installed in the trans pan. My trans temps on my CRD usually run anywhere from 120 Degrees Farenheit to about 160 on a hot day. If I am pulling my 3300 lb boat around town I have seen temps as high as 175 but out on the road the temps are usally around 150-160 due to the converter being locked up and a good amount of air flowing over the cooler. Hope this helps.

Do you have a link for the PML pan? What benefits does it provide over the stock pan? More fluid? Drain plug?

Yes to both. PML

Yes, my 06 CRD has a warning light for Trans Temp. So there must be an existing probe somewhere on ours that we could tap into. I too may be doing some towing later on down the road, so I would sleep a lot better at night being able to monitor my trans temps.

I agree that the best place is in-line with the pumped fluid. Having said that, I went with the easier choice of installing PMLs deep trans pan and having that boss drilled/tapped for the sender.

I'm glad you posted the temps you are getting on the inline location because those are nearly identical to my sump temps. I was worried that the lag time between increased load and increased temp would be lengthy with a sump temperature but it seems to respond quite well to ambient temps and driving styles. Maybe 20F higher, at worst, but very responsive. Thanks.

The PML boss puts the probe horizontal about an inch up from the bottom of the pan (outside dimension). I would avoid the drain plug installation as that places the probe too close to the bottom of the Jeep, concerns for both getting good circulation within the pan for temps and for knocking the thing off and dumping your fluid. Just my two cents...

Tom, all I did was cut a section out of the return line and place the tee with compression fittings in it's place. I am glad to hear that your set up is working well for you. The hardest part of installing my trans temp unit was finding a decent ground. I had to try several locations before I could even get the gauge to work.

There is another option I just found that keeps the probe at the tranny cooler line:

Now I just need to get serious and do it.
