How in the world will this make a "banging" noise maby a slight "thud" at best but I find that hard to belive

Image

If you look at the picture there can never be metal on metal contact it is like beating the concreat street with a rubber mall
It can not make a bang UNLESS it moves left or right realy fast and hits the mount but the OE shocks ,if properly installed, will not move

I'm gonna throw out a totally different hypothesis for anyone interested. It could be his sway bar hitting the harmonic balancer. I didn't have that problem until after I was lifted. I probably bent my balancer on the trail though. But I had the same clunking noise going over speed bumps in parking lots etc. I just pulled the swaybar off to remedy the situation.

Can the rear sway bar be taken out with no negative effects, such as cornering at higher speeds with all my gear in the back.... i'd like to remove it, but i wanna know if it's alright to do so

IMO the rear sway bar is "wimpy" it helps more than it hurts
I would leave it alone because with it on or off your flex is still limited by shock length and by the movement that the rear bushings will allow
any more info will require a whole new topic

When you lift a KJ, the rear shock are extended longer due to the lift. So, for a 2" lift, the KJ has to bounce downward (when going through a dip as originally posted) an additional 2" - thus 2" of additional travel in the shock are available for downward motion. Topping out does not apply as he stated that it clunks when going downward/bottoming out in a dip in the road...

As for the clunk going over anything - curb gutter, speed bump, ect - it's most likely the shock mounting bolts, so let us know the resolution of the mystery when you find it....

I will be crawling under to check it out this weekend assuming the rains stop long enough.

I know I'm a little late to this thread but I have experienced the same problem a couple of times. The first time it was caused by a loose shock mount and was repaired by the dealership. My symptoms were almost exactly as described, banging going over speed bumps, accelerating, etc. And I wasn't racing it or jumping it. The dealership tightened the shock mount and that noise went away.

The second rear end noise comes only under two situations. The first situation is when I am crossing a creek bed or washout diagonally and get full compression on one side with complete drop on the other. I've always assumed that this was just the rear end bottoming against the bump stop on one side or the other. The second situation occurs when I have my Libby loaded up with gear (lots of passengers and/or lots of gear loaded in the rear) and I'm traveling on moderately rough gravel roads (at reasonable speeds.) When I go through a dip or across ruts the rear end bangs. Again, I've assumed that I'm bottoming out the coils against the rubber bump stops.

I have no way of confirming this as I can't convince my son-in-law to hang underneath my Libby while I drive down gravel roads at 30 to 45 mph, but my theory is that the rear coils in my Liberty are not strong enough to handle some loads. This may be a fault only with my Libby or it may be a common problem, but the compromises involved in good highway manners mixed with off roading are likely the source. Keep in mind, this does not happen when the Liberty is lightly loaded, only with heavy loads. I am also running 10 ply, 245/70 R16s which probably helps aggravate the problem (higher unsprung weight.) I have checked the wheel wells for rub marks from the tires and haven't found anything.

Since the two symptoms seem to me to be related, my solution has been to mount air bags (there were other reasons as well, like better control while towing) in the rear springs of my Libby. I just made this upgrade and haven't had a chance to really try it out but I'll post again after I get the chance.

I'm running an 05 Liberty Sport with a mild 1.5 inch lift. Beyond tires and underbody protection, everything is pretty much as it came from Jeep.

Anyway, if anyone else has experienced this it would be interesting to hear about it.

I have not been able to check mine yet, my Mom passed away two weeks ago and have swamped with all things related to that. I should be able to crawl under this weekend and check the mounts.

Are you still getting rear end noise over speed bumps? I ask because I recently installed a Daystar lift and am listening for problems. Want to be ready to troubleshoot if needed.

I'm very sorry to hear about your mother's passing. You have my condolences.

T.J.

just a thought, but did anyone else think that it may be the muffler bearings not being greased or maybe the blinker fluid is low??

Thank you Video Guy for your condolences.

I have checked several times, learned to expect it so it doesn't bug me as much. I think it is the almost no clearance between the gas tank skid plate and my trailer hitch. When I first bolted the hitch on I had to use a pry bar as I tightened the bolts, I may have 1/8th of an inch between. I think when the unibody flexes, it contacts each other. I don't think the noise is caused by the lift. I am real happy with it, especially since I had the ball joint recall. Much tighter and no noise anymore up front. I do need to put the longer rear shocks on, that could be it at well.
