Cape Cod Beach-Wheeling!
Cost: $30/vehicle for a 7-day pass (but we'll just be using one day)
Location: End of Cape Cod (Provincetown area)

Must Bring: (from ORV site)

Shovel: Heavy-duty shovel equal to a military folding shovel
Towing Device: Any of the following which are at least 14 feet long:
Tow Strap: 11/2"; Rope: 3/4"; Chain 5/16"; Cable 1/4"
Jack: Standard size (e.g., vehicle manufacturer's jack)
Jack Support Board: Wood: 10" x 12" x 11/2" or Plywood: 10" x 12" x 3/4"
Tire Pressure Gauge: Must register to 5 p.s.i. or lower
Spare Tire: Must meet tire standards outlined below.
Tires: All 5 tires, including the spare tire, must meet or exceed the standards outlined below. These standards are minimum acceptable tire standards. (I'm pretty sure all KJ tires meet the standards)

The dates look good for me, HOWEVER... According to Google maps, it's 85 miles to the Sagamore bridge (est. travel time, 1 hour, 53 minutes), and 141 miles to P-Town. Now, normally, 141 miles should be a little over 2 hours, but Google estimates the travel time as 3 HOURS and 23 MINUTES!!! :cry:

That means I'm looking at almost 7 HOURS of travel time round trip. That's a LOT of driving just to spend the day... DRIVING!

Someone PLEASE tell me it doesn't take that long. I've never been to the cape, so I have no idea (yeah, I know, lived here all my life, never been). I really want to go, but that seems a bit much. Also, my WIFE was even thinking of going until she saw the travel times. Like I said, if anyone knows any different, PLEASE let me know.

Edit: Yahoo has it at 3 hours, 7 minutes, so it's closer to 6 hours total, but still...

I just looked at google, mapquest, and yahoo (did directions from plymouth, ma to provincetown, ma (which should be longer than from the bridge, right?):

Google: 77.2 miles, 2 hours, 3 minutes
Mapquest: 78.35 miles, 1 hour, 47 minutes
Yahoo: 76.5 miles, 2 hours, 4 minutes

Straight shot Lawrence, Ma to Provincetown, MA:
Google: 3 hours 27 minutes

You sure the directions they gave you don't involve swimming across the bay?? Actually, it sounds like maybe you figured out Lawrence -> Sagamore, and then instead of Sagamore->P-Town you did Lawrence -> P-Town, maybe?

Granted, there could be a fair amopunt of traffic, but this will be after labor day, so the cape will probably have calmed down a lot.

Those times were from Lawrence to P-Town. Like I said earlier, 7 hours of driving (not counting wheeling) in one day is quite a bit. Someone here at work also mentioned a ferry, or even the Cat, but I'd have to check pricing. Let me check around and I'll keep you posted.

Oh, I see, 7 hours round-trip. I thought you meant that it was 7 hours to get there, which I def didn't believe.

Yeah, I guess it's a bit of a hike from anywhere to get to the end of the cape. I wonder if anyone would be persueded for a breakfast and/or dinner stop at the edge of the cape. It would at least break up the driving distance a bit.

So, I looked into taking a ferry... THAT'S NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

Leave Boston at 8 am, arrive P-Town at 9:30. Next ferry is 1:00 PM if I miss it.
Leave P-Town at either 3 PM or 7:30 PM.

Pricing, $62 round trip PER ADULT $50 round trip PER CHILD (under 12) If my wife and 2 kids come along (my daughter is 14), then I'm loking at $236 round trip!

Man, I WANT to go, but I just don't know if I can swing this or not. Let me think for a while...

and that's not even including the cost for bringing a vehicle! (I assume you might like to bring a vehicle?)

I'm coming from just outside of Boston, so it's going to be a 6-hours-of-driving day for me, too. (plus wheeling).

To split the driving into two days, maybe there are places that you can camp or rent on the cape?

I didn't see any extra pricing for a vehicle on the site. Before I found the site, I just assumed you paid for the vehicle only, not per person. I guess I was wrong.

Tim I agree thats way too much money+ cost of $30.00 for wheelin on the beach,well for me it's 4 1/2 hrs of driving round trip + wheelin what ever that may be, it's a long day but from doing it already for me it's worth it,Orlando says he'll go again also, you guy's want to stop & eat thats fine with me

keep me posted if you guys change your mind or not,traffic should not be bad at all (kids back in school ) smooth sailing

I understand what you are saying Tim but to wheel in New England you have to travel alot to find anything at all. When Pete and i went to Laconia it was a hike but we figured there are no other places to go here so we made the sacrifice. Im sure we can do something to break the day up and make it less driving. As for me i was actually gonna drive to Paragon just to wheel but then again thats just me. It be nice if you can come. The more the merrier. if not thats o.k. too.Later

I read the State Park thingy - here's a lil blurb from it:

An Advanced Sales System is being established for 7-Day permits. Two hundred (200) of the 400 weekly permits offered will be available through the Advanced Sales System. The remaining 200 weekly permits will be issued, in person, on a first-come, first-served basis at the Oversand Station at Race Point.

Weekly permits through the Advanced Sales System must be purchased at least one week before the date of issue; the completed request form, with credit card/payment information, must be received by the Oversand Office no later than seven calendar days prior to the requested issue date. More than one week may be requested through the Advanced Sales System or in person.

Do we know for sure if there are any permits left for sale?

Id also like to go but thats too much driving in one day for me. Why pick the farthest point east possible? Its a pain in the booty for everyone to get there, other than the fun boys already living in P-Town...
Ill have to wait till next time, plus ill have my lift then.

It's not so much that we "picked" to go there as much as "there's nowhere else to go". I have yet to see anyplace in mass (or even new england for that matter) where for $30 you can buy a permit to have a legal and mapped out place to wheel.

And plus, the photos made it look like Pete + Orlando had a lot of fun!

Yea, whats with the lack of places to go up here anyways?? I was just thinking how cool it would be if someone made some type of winter track this year for us to test our Libs on. We do have extra land up here to spare after all...
I was excited the other day when I saw a bunch of huge sand mounds (8-9 ft tall) next to a local bar. After drinking for a few hours I attacked them with the Lib. The grade was so steep that my rear bumper dragged on the ground as i was climbing up. All I had was my camera phone so the pics were horrible. Im taking my digi camera and will attempt again this weekend. Ill post pics here and in the 4x4 forum at some point this weekend....

In Massachusetts it's illegal to wheel unless it's specifically allowed or you own the property / have permission from the owner of the property. It might be different in ME and NH. I know there are groups that ride in those states, but without signing up and paying their group dues, there's no easy way to find out where they ride. (I wouldn't mind signing up for a 4x4 group, but signing up for a group based in ME or NH seems silly when I live in MA).

Jeff's right where can we go????? this beach trip we took was definitaly worth $30 for us & we didn't even do 1/2 of what is actualy there maybe 1/8 if that WE WILL GO BACK

for us it was 4 1/2hrs round trip not including wheelin time my wife is not into wheelin by all means but she says she would definitly do it again (on the beach)
