Ok so I am now in the Norteast L.O.S.T. area. Took off today to take my wife to Boston for a teaching position. Doing the tourist thing. Hit the falls in Buffalo, staying the night in the Finger Lakes area (Auburn) on to Brookline tomorrow.
So if you see this poor Black Lib loaded to the MAX, I mean top rack loaded, rear rack loaded and no room inside, well that be us! Just give a wave, laugh and say that poor guy has to unload all that stuff!! HA!! Oh the wife just said she just brought the bare minimum??!! Maybe that is why I may never take her camping. :P

Welcome to Beantown! Lots of good spots to eat on Beacon Street in Brookline. I like Anam Cara, a good Irish pub. If you're looking for something to do on Saturday, other than unpacking, and the weather holds out, check out the Quincy Market/Government Center area. It's easy to walk around and there's something for everyone: shops, history, pubs. It's a great location to start experiencing Boston.

Best of luck to your wife. Where's she teaching? I start the semester at Babson tomorrow night. Student, not professor.

ratmloud, unexpected response! imagine my surprise when this old hippie/redneck meet this beautiful lady from Tanzania and she actually went out with me let alone married me. I keep telling her she is my retirement plan!!

raceinfan, we were suppose to move her in today, :( but the old tenants were still there, and they had to clean it yet so we escaped the city and somehow ended up in Middleboro tonight, not really sure why we are just here. I am staying here for a few days. We will see what happens tomorrow, (Saturday) and then hopefully regroup and get unloaded, Will let you know then for Sunday/Monday maybe What part of the area are you in?

We are staying in a Days Inn here. Kind of driving around and just ended up here and the place looked pretty good. Right off 495 I think

Arsenal Mall in Watertown, it's just across the river. Has a target, best buy, marshalls, home depot, linens and things, etc.

It's on Arsenal Street, should be pretty easy to find.

Eh, U-turns are only illegal here if there is a sign that says "No U-Turns" - anyplace else and you're allowed to so long as you don't gum up traffic or do anything stupid.

There's no overnight street parking in brookline at all anywhere. They are a little crazy there. Brighton/Allston requires a permit, as does every other place. Hopefully your new place has a driveway or you're pretty much screwed :-P

You get used to the traffic. After awhile you get used to which roads tend to be less crowded and move faster (for example, through brighton, I take Faneuil street instead of Washington Street, because washington is like a parking lot litterred with red lights, but faneuil moves pretty well and is right parallel to it.) Not sure of any good brookline secrets, I usually skip past brookline by taking storrow when I go downtown.

You forgot CT! Watch out, those troopers are the toughest. Driving from NY to MA during college, I spent plenty of time in Connecticut (55 MPH). It's the only state I got a ticket in (knock on wood). The funny part is, I got pulled over in NY on time and the trooper heard my story (it's late at night, mid-term next morning, I was returning from a funeral) and let me go with a warning. Less than 5 minutes later, I crossed the CT border and was pullled over by CT trooper. I gave the same story, which was 100% true, and he gave me a ticket. CT = Heartless.

Years later (2005), I was blazing west across I-90 from Boston to Albany (in a Misubishi Galant) for my Grandma's funeral and, as I crested a hill, a NY trooper WALKED across the right lane, through traffic way ahead of me, to flag me down. He was standing on the dashed white line between the right and middle lanes when I passed him on the left. This brave soul gave me a warning and told me to slow down or I would see my grandma again soon.

In summary: 1) The NY trooper had b*lls and character, 2) CT troopers are heartless, and 3) CT has a 55 MPH limit on most interstates, adjust speed accordinglingly or just avoid the state if possible.

Sorry for the rant and CT bashing. It's just that I spent so much time driving through it from NY to MA during college. I feel much better about CT now that I have Sirius radio and can listen to Stern for the whole ride.

Mr. Mudd, Apologies for going off topic on your thread. I hope you had a great trip and have safe travels home and when you return. QUESTION: What is the most odd, dumb, or ridiculous Boston driving experience/law that you experienced during your visit? You were in town for a week, so you probably have 7 of them. Be honest. We're called Massholes for a reason... Our driving.

The ticket that really got to me was a parking ticket at Boston U, on Commonwealth, pulled in to an empty spot, jumped out, tried to put money in the meter, meter person was taking coins out 2 meters down , came up and told me that the meter was broken would not take coins, soI said is it OK to park here? Sure he says, I walk 2/3 minutes to my wifes office, we come straight back to the Liberty and there is a cop writing a ticket for 20 bucks, I said it will not take coins and he said Yes I wrote that on the ticket! I said well thats not fair and he replied Life isnt fair deal with it. After some "dicussion" it seems the meter person flagged the cop down to write the ticket. What a scam!
Well gotta go load up after I find my Liberty in some far off Guest Parking area!
Later

tom from toledo

You can contest that ticket and win. You're still allowed to park at broken meters, they are just one hour max instead of two hours (and I believe the meters say that right on them - they do downtown anyway).
