Both.

Looks like you got stuck going somewhere that would be challenging with bigger Mud Terrains let alone tiny stock tires.

"crawling underneath to tie a chain to your axle is no fun" That there is stupid.

I think that the more important thing you should KNOW is that chains are not for pulling.
and NEVER go off road with out front AND rear recovery points
When we go on club rides tow hooks or recovery points font and rear are manditory no hooks no ride it is that simple
hooking to some thing that was not designed to be pulled is bad no matter what

If I were you befor I spend a dime on any thing I would buy a hich and hooks
then you will need things like skids ,rock rails ,tires ,lift .............

I couldnt agree more Jason, after this experience the rules about having front and back tow points seems like unquestionable logic. Iv only added front tow hooks so far so I'm not going out until I get a hitch and a D shackle to go in it. I knew that hooking up to a part that wasnt designed for towing would be a bad idea (too bad I didnt have that realization before I went out and got stuck). I wasnt aware though that chains should not be used for pulling, I thought they would be the top choice if it wasnt for their weight and the amount of room required to carry one long enough.

shackel not needed
place loop from bottom of hich around top then around the part that you would put the hich ball in
or if you will not be pulling real hard ,jerking, then just use the hich pin
put the strap in the reciver tube and slide the pin through but use care not to bend the pin or it is a real pain to get it out
