OK - Hopefully we can get more details to get ironed out.

It looks to be a 7 hour drive or so from Chicago, so if those of us from the area can get moving by 6 PM or so, we might be able to drive straight thru with the aid of some red bull/coffee/whatever and get to the campground around 1 am. Not sure if we would be able to pitch our tents at that hour - maybe if we pay ahead of time we can just show up and do that.

Should we use our noormal meeting spot - O'Hare Oasis? Would it be better to meet somewhere off of 94 instead of 294? Looks like most of the route will be I-57, so I am not sure what a better starting point is.

I assume we will 'wheel all day saturday and sunday, and head back north on monday.

What kind of campground equipment are people going to bring? Lanterns, cookware, table, etc, etc.

Anything I missed?

I have no experience on Hwy 1 in IL but it appears to be a much more direct route south - doesn't seem to drift as much to the west. Never the less - I figure because it will be rush hour for our commute, I will probably plan on meeting south of the city rather than wasting time in traffic headed to 294. I anticipate being able to hit the road by 6pm.

Avg temps appear to be: Hi - low 70's Low - upper 40's

some gear I will be bringing:
tent
propane lantern
firewood - hopefully picking up on the way
chair
small & lg tarps
5 gal water cooler

7. jasonk - eddo, i'll caravan with you on this one, since you have to come south 75.

There is no way I could go, but I am wondering...since this is sort of an exploratory pre-run and it seems that everyone going is lifted and armored, would it be out of line for someone with a stock rig to sign up? Just curious.

That would not be frowned upon at all. Anyone is welcome. If we are heading to a trail we think might cause damage, you can ride along in an armored rig.

None of us have any clue what the trails are like at Turkey Bay, either, so who knows what kind of rig is appropriate where.

I would also expect us to have another pre-run prior to the big event. At least, I plan on going some other time - just not then...

According to KJ-BOL, Hwy 1 has lots of stoplights and travels thru a bunch of small towns. We plan to stick with I-57, as the higher speed should negate any of the problems heading tool far west, hopefully.

Lets try to settle on a meeting point a little ways down I-57 so that we aren't trying to muster up in traffic (unless SunDvl still plans on taking Hwy 1). If that's the case, BakerKJ and I can probably use KJ-BOL's office as a starting point. I plan to pack the jeep on Thursday evening and get on the road right after work on Friday.

A little note on Turkey Bay - I got this from another jeep club...

TB is ~2000 acres with a good selection of trails.

Trail difficulty ranges from easy to difficult and generally has alternate routes to chose from if you want something harder or easier.

If you stick to the main trail you will be board unless your out for a Sunday drive.
TB has fairly dense vegetation so be prepared for pinstriping from branches and occasional tight turns.

Main trails are marked ... off shoots are not. Some will end up being ATV trails and will get tight so scout ahead if your not sure about getting through.

Dave Taylor as a nice GPS map listing all of our favorite spots ..... http://davidwtaylor.org/jeeps/maps/T...ay_GPS_Map.htm

other misc info can be found here as well http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/showthread.php?t=1856

I'm not set on Hwy 1 - I was just scoping out alternative routes. I will meet those traveling from Chicago on I-57 around 80, we can set up a more specific place shortly. I am hopeful to get off work a little early on Friday but otherwise I can hit the road by 6. I really doubt we will be able to set up camp at 1 am but you never know.

Henry - that looks to be the same map Eddo posted.

Motel 6 in Marion, IL has an internet rate of $30.50. It looks like it would be about 90 min. to LBL (in case you want to get off the road before 1am!)

well, crap, that sounds like a good plan. I can swing $30 for sure.

Marion is about 5.5-6 hours out from Chicago, and then Golden Pond, KY is about 2 hours out from Marion.

We'd be able to roll into marion before midnight for sure, and then get an early start to LBTL to set up camp and go 'wheeling.

Great find, Moose! I will probably book this today, as long as most of the others chime in if they wanna do the same thing.

I'll be going only for saturday.... need to be back in Chitown Sunday no matter what
let me find a place where we can meet along 57 south on the way there.
the hotel deal sounds good to me.
Setting up camp at 2 am or later will be tough - remember, we will be loosing an hour due to timezones- are we not? not sure...

UPDATE:

We have found 3 trailguides from itsajeep.org, which is a club local to the area, willing to show us around Turkey Bay out of the kindness of thier hearts. If you guys have the time, please stop over and thank them!

I guess this area has lots of hidden gems that you will never find unless shown where they are.

Here's the thread about our run on their forum:
http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/showthread.php?t=5401

Also, who plans to stay at the Super 8 in Marion on Fri night? Never got any confirmation from SunDvl or BakerKJ. KJ-BOL has said he is down for that plan.
