Segway's inside businesses poll

We have this guy in our neighborhood who rides his Segway into the grocery store. Cruises up and down the aisles, drives through the checkout line, etc., etc., etc.

Where should we draw the line on Segways? A skateboard or pair of inline skates takes up less space than a Segway, but both of those would be thrown out of a grocery store, along with their owner.

The devil's advocate in the neighborhood brought up that the Segway was the same type of device as a Jazzy, or other electric-powered assisted living device. But I disagree. The Segway is an alternative transportation device, like a bicycle, skateboard, or inline skates.

An assisted living dog is allowed in a grocery store, but my goofy loveably mutt is not. I'm okay with that and it makes perfect sense to me. But I also think that the same (conceptual) rule should apply to transportation devices.

My vote: The Segway is not a medical assisted-living device and should not be allowed any place that a skateboarder or rollerblader is.

I say NO, and if someone does actually use one because they could not walk around the store, they can park it at the front, and get on one of the mart carts that nearly everyone provides now. They are too big and fast for that situation, plus you might be walking behind one when it suddenly slams into reverse and runs you right over :shock:

Not a medical device. Most of the time if you can stand....you can walk. I wouldn't mid seeing them in the mall or somewhere with plenty of space. The rollerblade/skate rule sounds good to me.

How lazy will people get??? Colostomy bags for everyone!!!!!! (no offense to anyone that might have one either OK, unless it is out of laziness).

The way I see it, not allowing roller skates/skateboards is a liability issue. If someone gets hurt because a store owner allowed those in, he's accepting liability. Same w/a Segway. Not a registerable vehicle so no insurance. One runs over my foot in a store, I'm gonna own that store!

Slightly off topic but related....

I work the Checkpoint in an airport. Do you know how many times I see someone get out of a car, either go themselves or have someone go to the airline counter and say they need a wheelchair (we don't have skycaps so u gotta lug ure own crap - all of about 30' to the counter). Then the airline will send someone out, collect thier bags, push them in in the wheelchair and then bring them over to the checkpoint....

Where as soon as they are told that they have to get a complete pat down if they have to stay in the wheelchair, they immediately jump up and walk right through the metal detector with no problem or need for the chair again!

I've even seen people pushing wheelchairs piled with thier luggage and someone who actually needs one can't find one. Or people that will walk all over the entire airport, back and forth until they finally find a wheelchair to plop into and then start with "Can someone get someone to push me"! :shock:

I kid you not!

Or my other favorite - people who come through in electric scooters whose only disability is that they are too fat to walk on thier own! Do you know what a hassle those things are at security? I'm not talking people that are actually disabled, just fat!

Almost as bad as the families that insist on coming to the checkpoint with their huge jogging strollers with wheels bigger than what's on my KJ, 2 car seats, 15 bags and all kinds of crap for a 2 hr flight, then get annoyed when it takes time to hand check their fat@ss stroller that won't fit through the xray machine, duh! I mean, how much crap do you really need for 1 kid for a 2 hr flight? Do you really need to have that huge stroller in the cabin with you? Ever hear of a portable fold up stroller if u got a small kid?

And laziness..... I had a friend in high school who had either MS or MD, not really sure. Anyway, he used to drive a Jeep with special hand controls and had a handicap permit which he used to hate to use because he didn't want to feel disabled. Sometimes however there were no regular parking spots close enough for him to walk to without being in pain when we went someplace like the mall or movies, so he would use his handicapped permit and park in those spots. Well, we were driving around this McDonalds in a mall around xmas looking for a spot so we could eat. No regular spots at all and we see one handicapped spot open. As we go to pull in this guy in a sports car grabs the spot, no permit plate or placard and obviously not handicaaped. We drive around a little more and finally hoof it into the place. When we get in, guess who's on line in front of us? Now, my friend is on those metal crutches, braces on his legs, obviously walking twisted.... Walks right up behind the guy and YELLS "Who's got the red (whatever kind of car) that just parked in the handicapped spot?" Guy turns around, sees my friend and just leaves......

I'm jealous of segway owners.

It's like the debate between the guy with the push mower and the neighbor who has the riding mower.

The guy with the push mower will insist that his way is better(cause he cant afford the riding mower), and the guy with the riding mower guy laughs while he eats his brunch, because the push mower guy is still outside cutting.

Segways are a cool toy and there is no reason to object to them being in places which are obviously open enough for it.

Some places are a obvious no.

Examples:

Hospitals
Any medical care center
Places where small children greatly outnumber adults. (Schools, daycares, ect..
Any building subject to very high concentrations of people moving about.

Places that are ok:
The mall
Supermarket
Quick-e-mart
Superstores(K-mart,walmat,walgreens,lowes, sears, Home depot, ect...)

You might ask yourself..

"Who died and made Miah god of segway rules?"

The question is not "who died..." it is rather, "who did he kill...".

The answer to that is, "The Previous god Of Segway Rules."

At the airport in Baltimore (BWI) the cops ride those darn things around. No I was under the impression that cops were in somewhat good shape, but the Segway Police at the airport are all on the round side.

The mall? could you imagine if everyone at the mall had one of those, or even half? Would be funny to watch from upstairs though. Especially when you see one that hasnt been in for the recall yet.

The Segway is not a toy. It was supposed to be the "IT" of all time. The revolutionary product for all time.

Uh....NOT. It is a transportation device and should be treated as such. The mall is TOO crowded to allow a Segway. It is hard enough to walk with out dodging and bumping into people.

The airport works just fine with wide lanes. I saw them used at the Atlanta airport on the tramway level. I walked the whole way from D terminal to the baggae claim and going the other way when I was leaving Atlanta. No tram for me. You miss the sculpture & art exhibit from Africa when you take the tram.

people in wheelchairs need them at the supermarket/mall, etc., much like my late mother who had bone cancer; people on segways are likely just on the segway to be lazy, thus they don't NEED them (medical need would be different). Also, there is not enough room in supermarkets, malls and the like for fast moving segways. Wheelchairs & scooters go about the same speed as humans.

btw - i hope this doesn't effect the ship date on the frankenlift :wink:
