What do I need to regear to 4.10

What parts are needed to regear from 3.73 to 4.10? Obviously 4.10 ring & pinion gears for both the Dana 30a and Chrysler 8.25" and new crush sleeves will be needed, but is there anything else? Do I need to buy a diff rebuild kit? Also, I thought I read somewhere that the carrier might need to be changed....

You listed all the essentials. Just make sure you buy the front 4.10 ring and pinion from Mopar. I also bought a master install kit for the rear and the inner/outer pinion bearings for the front.

You might need New lockers for the appropriate gear ratio if you have those.

I think I'm going to replace the factory LSD with an ARB Air Locker when I do the regearing. I may as well do it all at once, especially with the insane price of synthetic gear lube.

Skyjump136, why'd you only buy the bearings for the front but the entire master install kit for the rear?

I don't think there is a master install kit for the front...could be wrong though. I was told by the local gear/diff guy that if I couldn't find a master install kit to at least buy the pinion bearings. Unfortunately, the entire install kit for the rear is cheaper than buying two bearings for the front from Mopar. :shock:

It seems like the Mopar 4.10 gear kit comes with a new crush sleave, pinion nut, and ring gear bolts. Is this true or will I need to purchase the crush sleave seperately?

I know the D30 ring and pinion won't work in the D30a because of the pinion length, but will a D30 master install kit work with the D30a so I don't have to buy all of the little parts for outrageous prices?

Has anyone done the 4:10 conversion in a 5-speed yet? Would that make 1st gear in 4-low lower?

Everything will turn the same speed except the axle shafts and tires. The drive shafts will have to turn 4.1 revolutions instead of 3.7 revs the get the tire to rotate once.

unixxx, so how you goin with this ? all done yet or still chasing bits ?

I'll have to do this in the next 6 months too as i'm going to go with 265's soon. Are you doing it yourself or giving it to the pro's ?

I've got the ARB rear locker, wonder if i'll need anything special ? I hope not.

Skyjump136, why did you say "make sure you buy the front from Mopar" ? just curious ? Is it cause that was you are guaranteed to get the right bits, ie: not recieve regular D30 stuff ? Or is it something to do with the quality ?

OzLtd, I'm still looking some stuff up. The Pirate 4x4 guide is awesome and I actually know what I'm doing now that I've read it. I've yet to order the parts, but plan on doing it myself as soon as Rock Lizard's HD diff cover ships. I don't think there's anything special about the ARB, other than that you need to drill and tap the diff housing. The ARB doesn't require a friction modifier, so if you were using that, you don't need it anymore. The installation manual also mentions modifying the oil passages between the axle tubes and diff housing for better flow. Skyjump136 said to buy the front from Mopar because they're the only company that "makes" ring & pinions for the D30a. I'm going to buy mine from Worldpartsexpress.com, who sell the the Mopar 4.10 gears for a better price.

Now I know why this costs so much. I phoned the dealership today; a single shim size is $8 and a set of all sizes is over $400. Of course it's a Dana 30a, so they're the only ones that make the pinion shims. Anyways, there was some good news. Most of the parts, excluding the pinion shims :roll:

, can be found in other axles as well.

Dana 44: Rear pinion bearing and cup

Dana 30: Front pinion bearing and cup, Carrier bearings and cups

Dana 35: Pinion nut, Carrier bearings and cups

Maybe it'd be best to buy a master install kit for the Dana 30 to get the front pinion bearing, carrier bearings, carrier shims???, ring gear bolts, and marking compound. The pinion seal and rear pinion bearing can be procured online and the crush sleeve, pinion nut, and pinion shims from the dealership. In theory the Mopar gears have depth variance numbers, which should help with the pinion shims. I'll have to compare the cost of all these parts and tools to paying someone to do it
