Hopefully they figure it out. If something like that happens, can we take the engine to a Detrioit Diesel shop under waranty?

When I starting having problems with mine last Winter, I called the local Detroit Diesel/Allison shop. Keep in mind this is a shop which I had a prior business relationship. They told me they can not get authorized by DC to do any warranty work on a VM Motori engine. They even sounded scripted in their response. I then called DC (the rat on your lousy dealer line), they told me I must have warranty work done by a "Jeep" dealer (they made a point of defining the difference between Dodge, Jeep, and Detroit Diesel dealers) and then referred me back to my selling dealer. That's when I sent a demand letter and finally got their attention.

UPDATE!!!

After the 6th day, it finally made it to the service bay at Mission Jeep. Not really Mission Jeep's fault...just bad timing with the towing to two dealerships and then the weekend hit. The service manager called me to give me the bad news...not any detail, just that there was a major malfunction. "George" was very cordial on the phone and told me not to worry about the rent-a-car issue for now. I have a feeling that DC might be on the fence with this one. I know that they try to adhere to a 70% rule...If they can fix it for 70% or less they would rather go that route than replace with new. That is NOT GOING TO SATISFY ME in this instance. Collateral damage concerns and the fact that the CRD is only about 3.5 months old with 8,100 miles means that I will only accecpt a new engine and turbo as a fix. I will not accept a "bandage" job on this new of a vehicle. My stance will be any thing less than 12,000 miles (1/3 of the warranty term) needs to be restored as new.

I am sure I will have to go thru a few hoops but that is not new to me and I am prepared for the worst. We will see...I will probably get a call from a DC District Rep or something soon enuff.

Were they willing to discuss the root cause of this failure and the full extent of the mechanical damage? One of the things that bugs me with this design is the Bosch pump and water pump are both driven with the timing belt. If either of these fails and throws the belt, it's all over.

Good luck on the new engine (and I wouldn't settle for less). Just a gut hunch, coming up with a VM Motori crate engine will take some serious work (and time beyond the Lemon Law limits). I would not want to have their Fed-ex bill from Italy.

Well they ordered a new engine and turbo today...the first thing that probably happened was a valve broke at the keeper...it went into the piston and is still there. When they undid the engine, the first thirty seconds was a release of water/antifreeze and then followed by oil. The valve was stabbing everything in its path including the Glow Plug. Then the pieces traveled to parts unknown...basically it beat itself to death. The timing belt was still intact...

New engine/Turbo should be here no later than Monday...so I get to break in another one.

Glad to hear the dealer is taking care of you and this is not a common problem. Sound like a misplaced keeper that happens on one of just about any automotive engines made. Be glad it happen in warrenty and not later. 8)

I might try to get down to the dealership tomorrow and get some pics...if they let me. Would be interesting to see the damage first hand

Dang Darby...just read the post. I feel bad for you. This must be the most catastrophic failure to date. I'm glad they're taking care of you though, from what it sounds like. I bet you miss her and all that torque, don't you? Hope they get it done soon.

Dave

 Yikes! Would be cool to see what the insides look like. Sounds like a nice mess. Very cool they are handling it. My dealer would tell me they installed a new engine only for me to find nothing done at all.

Well I sure wish you luck on any time table they give you for parts. My first CRD was a lemon. I had 165 miles on it and the engine just shut off and never started again and I was 97 miles from the dealer I bought it from. AAA plus got me back there. First I was told I put gas in it(owned diesels all my life, try again), then bad high pressure rail regulator, days for that part to come in, still no pressure in fuel rail, then bad pump regulator, try again, then ecm, no dice, then bad high pressute fuel pump, sorry we have the parts, but we do not have the tools to lock the camshafts and crank shaft to change the pump, so it took around 7 weeks to get to that point, I finally have a new CRD, so far so good. I hope your dealer has a good relationship with the factory to get your CRD back and running the way it should be. On the extending warrenty good luck I have seen customers try and try in the past and get no where with that one.

Welcome aboard diesel161. Sorry to hear about your woes too. Cool to have a DD/Allison service tech on the board.
