I understand everything being said, but am I the only person that thinks this system is lacking. Do all cars have this? or are you telling me Jeep is ahead of the curve? If I bought a xterra or crv would I still be driving my wife around in a car with one airbag. I thought they had airbag that are 2 stage deployment, so it does not harm people. As for seeing them go off, I still can see the burns on my arm from the one that went off in my nissan, still was much better than face first into window. and for the record my wife is 5'4 110+lbs, so that does not seem overly small to me. I am new to the SUV world so it may just be my ignorance but I was hoping for side impact airbags.

Some Kjs come with side impact air bags...look under your seat belt mounts, that plastic trim piece will have an SRS tag on it if it does in fact have them, my 2005 Kj RME had those, my new 06 Sport doesn't though...

Why would your face hit the window if you had your seat belt on? I cannot understand why everyone is saying this? :?

And yes, 110lbs is small compared to the force an airbag puts off. I can promise you that many hours of figuring have gone into designing the air bags in the liberty. They didnt throw this thing in there b/c they thought it was cool. Its a safety feature!!!

All Jeeps (and other vehicles) need to pass certain safety requirements mandated by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Administration (Standards - FMVSS) I am not sure if other companies are using a system similar to OCS, but they probably will in the future (2007 Chrysler Sebring has it - that was my last project.)

Think of the fold flat front passenger seat found in cars like the Chevy Malibu. Say you've got a laptop sitting there and you get rear ended. There is no point for the PAB to deploy since there isn't an occupant sitting there. And if the bag did deploy, the Laptop [or what ever else] can become a projectile with tiny little pieces flying all over. No body wants to be attacked by a laptop.... Things like this have led to the invention of OCS. Also, when an airbag goes off on "low" deployment, it only takes a couple of micro-seconds to inflate 100%. Even a low deployment bag has a lot of force behind it that can cause serious injury if you are not wearing a seatbelt.

Tips:

Never put your feet on the dashboard of any PAB equipped car. The bag can fold a person in half
Never put your hands over the steering wheel in such a way that the air bag could force your own hand to smack you in the head. I've seen a hole in a CTD's head from a thumb
Always wear a seatbelt

BTW - I can't find my crash footage of the Liberty. I must have deleted it. Sorry guys.

I think you guys are blinded by your love of Jeeps. My Lexus does not have this issue. My 1995 Nissan Altima had both air bag delpoy of my wife and I and it did not harm either of us, except slight burns from being slapped in the forearms when the bag deployed. I guess I am the only person that thinks maybe they said , "hey it easier(read easier and cheaper) to just shut it off then to figure out a way to safely delpoy", like in more expensive cars or trucks.

This is my first Jeep so forgive me if I offend any long time loyal owners, other than this airbag issue I love the lib.

What happens when she is the driver? Is that a different airbag? there seems to be no weight limit for the driver side bag.

getting attached by a laptop would only happen, if I understand correctly, if you have the laptop seat belted in. Again I think you guys are missing the point. I want an airbag that are usable by my wife and I believe other car companies provide this feature why doesn't Jeep, this is the only vehicle I have been in that has weight checks in passengers seat. Are you telling me an $80,000 BMW or Audi have the same problem? I doubt it, my wifes last car a VW had 4 airbags and no weight limit and that was an 04 same as my Jeep.

There is a completely different air bag in the steering wheel. Yes... The reason there isn't OCS on the drivers side is because most people position themselves in a "decent" postion to accept an airbag hit. Meaning (for shorter people) the seat is moved up in the air and forward in vehilce to comfortably reach the steering wheel and pedals. The air bag in the drivers seat goes off everytime there is an accident where it's required.

I totally understand that you want to have the PAB go off - I am just trying to help explain the determining factors around packaging, development and positioning of the modules. In my original post, I was wondering about the threshold weight of the system... I thought it was 90lbs, but I also heard 75lbs. Have you tried sitting in the passenger seat to see if the light deactivates? Possibly there is an issue (I hope not) with your sensor that the dealership needs to look at? I am an engineer so I don't tend to explain things well, I make everything more complicated than it is...

OCS was invented to save lives, save $$ [where applicable] and improve the feeling of "safety."

It should also be noted that this isn't just a Jeep thing, it is featured in just about all the new DCX products, if not all of them. It is also found on a lot of Brand X cars both foreign and domestic. I'd say it will be standard soon, if the legislation isn't already in place for all passenger vehicles.

Howdy Sleeve, nice to hear your results of the airbag testing. I guess we can take it as a positive on the liberty that you personally drive one.
I have a question about the results of occupants wearing sunglasses during airbag deployments. Have they ever tested those on the 'dummies'?

Hats with a brow [baseball caps] will leave a depression on the skin where the plastic gets pushed on the head. Sunglasses are the same. mainly cuts and bruises but no serious injuries to the eyes or head that I have noticed. but these are only though first hand accounts as I haven't ever seen a CTD wearing a hat or accessories.

And yes, I love the Liberty... Very sturdy and a good vehicle for accidents (not that I ever want anyone to be involved with one)

The new Minivan, Sebring, Avenger will all have OCS. I worked on the IP for the 07 Sebring / 08 Avenger platform

sleeve thanks for your info, I have already brought the Lib to the dealer because as I drive and my wife moves around the light comes and goes, they tested the seat and everything works as stated, they did tell me about the 5th percent tile weight and that my wife may fall in that range. Again thanks for your info
