 Post subject: Tranny Lag?

As of late it seems when i'm going to accelerate i have for lack of a better way to explain it, a lag in my tranny/gas pedal.

As my foot is going down nothing happens, there has been times i've put my foot to the floor (not slamming it, easing into it) and its taken maybe 3-5 seconds to actually do anything at all, my revs will go up but i wont go any faster, it like stands still for maybe 2-5 seconds.

Its as if my throtle isn't responding to the movements of the pedal.

Anyone have any idea where i should begin looking?

Check your trans fluid level. It sounds like your tranny is slipping. What year is your liberty and how many miles do you have on it?

You said the revs go up but it doesn't go anywhere for 3 - 5 seconds. When it finally does does start going somewhere, does it catch catch all at once like it finally shifted into a gear, or does it catch over a period of time like a clutch is grabbing?

it will catch all at once and you'll really feel the power of the KJ.

Its an 03 freedom edition with about 64K on it.

I'd second what detroit_doc said. Check the fluid levels. If the level is OK, I wonder if it's something like I experienced after I did my tranny maintenance.

After sitting at work all day, when I went to drive it it would take @ 1-2 seconds before engaging in drive. Checked into it and there's a service bulletin that is called "delayed engagement after transmission maintenance". I think they had a rash of bad return filters (?) and basically had to re-do the tranny maintenance to replace it. They either replaced the filter or a return line, if there is one of those. It's been a while since I had this done, can ya tell? BTW, I have a 45RFE trans.

Anyways, I'm wondering if your issue is fluid draining back down from the TC due to a similar issue. BTW, I'm by no means a tranny expert, just an expert at throwing my $.02 around.

Check the fluid like everyone has said..

How many times have you changed the fluid? Did you use ATF +4? When was the last time you changed it? Sometimes after changing it youve got to get the tranny reprogrammed, or get something called a "quick learn" done. Learned all that from Eddo.. :wink:

honestly, i doubt its ever been done, i got the car with about 20K miles on it.

Either way it should be done even if they did do it, i'd like to get alot of maintanence done before winter.

Is there a write up roaming around on how?

You definately need to get the fluid changed. Your converter could be wearing out also. Do you have the 42RLE or the 45RFE?

I dunno if yours is doing it all the time...but my Freedom edition also has a similar problem of a lag. It occurs over 45 mph when I am trying to accellerate on the highway or something. It annoyed the living daylights outta me! I would have it floored and it wouldn't accellerate! My boyfriend (who regularly works as a mechanic) told me that if I just hit the overdrive button off, (that small button on the side of the shifter on the auto) then the Jeep will downshift out of overdrive and be able to acellerate! Once I get up to speed, I then hit the button so it goes back into overdrive and I don't severly damage my gas mileage!

Ok, I now see that it is when you are stopped...sorry! But maybe my post will help someone else...

Yup, everytime I get into my jeep I hit the button and dont hit it again till I get over 55mph. I do it without even knowing it now.

Thats just DC's way of trying to get better MPG out of the 3.7. I cannot stand it and im waiting for a programmer to come out and fix it. :?

I don't think it helped much! Darn DC...they haven't a clue how to get good fuel economy out of anything! Or power (excluding Hemi)....it's a shame they own the Jeep brand! I absolutely love my Jeep and wouldn't trade it for the world...but I hate the fuel econmy and lack of power!

My Fluid level is right. I went against my usual judgement and had my fluid changed. Now I get this problem and have complained about it. I'd like to punch the service guy right in his GOsh Damedd teeth, on monday if they don't fix the problem...I will!!!

I should'nt have to research the problem !!!!!

I'm frickin sick of substandard service.

I have personally driven a vehicle 153K on ONE oil change. Synthetic oil after the first oil change and a bottle of slick 50 trans treatment in the tranny. I sold it at 153K still running like a champ.

I let some MOPAR ignorant idiot change my tranny fluid cause I'm getting soft and WHAM!!

Ouch. My stealership fixed it with no issues. Looks like you've got the right TSB number. Good luck!
