octagonal icons

I have a question about those octagonal icons beside the thread headings. When a new post comes up, the circular thing rotates. On my computer, this happens some of the time, but not always. I have just been checking the post dates for new posts. Is this a problem with my computer or has anyone else noticed this? It's not a big hairy deal, I'm just curious.

Maybe it has to do with which style you have for the board presantation - I use Aphrodite and it shows a red circle with and arrow pointing at all new posts, once I've looked at it the circle/arrow turns blue.
