Have any of you installed a remote starter on your CRD? I live in an area that sees -15 on a regualr basis in the winter. At home this is not an issue since I can plug in the block heater, but at work it sits in the elements for 9-10 hours with no chance of being plugged in. I would like to jump in after work and head for home. I do not like the idea of running 55mph 2 minutes after startup nor do I want to sit and wait 5 minutes to leave for home.

You should wait a while before thinking about the install. It gets cold where I live as well. Last winter I drove off after many cold nights, or after the jeep was in the lot the whole day. You do get heat very fast, but the overdrive will not work until running temp is reached. You can drive at hiway speed, just not have od. It kicks in after temp is up.

Just my opinion, but if you can't wait 2 mins, or even 5 you should not have gotten a diesel.

Although idling for 2 minutes is a necessary evil to cool down the turbo and provent oil coking of the turbo bearings, idling all other times is BAD for a diesel and not something I recommend.

Turbo seals need boost to keep them sealed. Excessive idling will cause increased oil into the air intake and possible wear on the turbo seals.

At idle, fuel is not efficiently burned and you can get a significant washdown of oil coating the cylinder walls from the unburnt diesel fuel. You'll also see increased fuel dilution as a result....more frequent oil changes needed.

Wetstacking? Not sure if this would be an issue but I've seen older diesels damaged/hurt from not having a sufficient load on the engine, i.e. idling.

The CRD heats up very quickly. But if you need heat prior to driving your best bet is a fuel powered pre-heater

An ESPAR heater would suit you perfectly. http://www.lubricationspecialist.com/index.php?

Websato may also have a heater that can be modified to work.

Oh, I run 80mph within 2 minutes of starting my CRD in the winter. My only oil analysis 7500 OCI, showed no unfavorable wear. I just take it easy and don't accelerate fast when engine is cold...let auto tranny shift at 2200-2300 rpm.

I have the 'MOPAR' (Audiovox) remote start. I would go aftermarket if you get one, they have many more options (valet mode, turbo timer, etc). After starting, mine will run 10 minutes and then shut itself off if i don't get to it before hand.

The CRD has a viscous heater, so wetstacking shouldn't be an issue. I say shouldn't because unless someone in a official capacity says it okay I am reluctant to say for sure one way or the other.

Idling still isn't a good idea. Why not use the block heater? It doesn't use as much electricity as they used to years ago because back then they had tank heaters as well to keep the tanks heated to prevent fuel gelling. If you don't want to give it power all the time, use a timer and set it to come on about 3 hours before you drive off in the morning.
