Found this article at another forum. Anybody thinking about applying? Does our Lib meet the qualifications?

http://www.dieselforum.org/policy-insid ... ax-credit/

WWV - 2006 Silver Sport CRD - Utah

Federal Clean Diesel Tax Credit

Clean diesel cars, pickups and SUVs purchased between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2010 are eligible for a new federal tax credit. To qualify, new diesel vehicles must:

* Be powered by an internal combustion engine which:
o Designed to operate primarily using more air than is necessary for complete combustion of the fuel
o Incorporates direct injection
o Achieves a minimum 25% increase in city fuel economy compared to a similar 2002 vehicle (inertia weight class)
* Vehicle weighing 6000 pounds or less must meet Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions
* Vehicle weighing more than 6000 pounds but not more than 8500 pounds must meet Tier 2 Bin 8 emissions

The credit amount for passenger cars and light duty trucks ranges from $250 up to $3400 depending on achieving certain performance standards for improved fuel economy and fuel conservation (gallons saved) over the life of the vehicle.

* Fuel economy credit can range from $400 to $2400 with a minimum threshold of a 25% improvement as compared to 2002 model year city fuel economy (based on vehicle inertia weight class – see below)
* Conservation credit can range from $250 - $1000 dollars with a minimum threshold of at least 1200 gallons of gasoline saved over the life of a vehicle driven 120,000 miles.

Phase-out period

Each automotive manufacturer is limited to selling 60,000 vehicles (hybrid or diesel) that qualify for the advanced vehicle credit. In the first calendar quarter following the sale of the 60,000th qualifying vehicle, a phase-out period begins. The applicable percentage of the incentive during the phase out period is as follows:

* 50% for the first 2 calendar quarters of the phase-out period.
* 25% for the 3rd and 4th calendar quarters of the phase-out period, and
* 0% thereafter

Why only the 2007 GC? The 2006 seems to meet the standards and the purchase timeline. Try it! Heck, does the used Jetta I bought this year count? Seems to.

You can pretty much kiss any tax relief goodbye given the recent election results. Hold onto your wallets, folks!

From the initial info, it said vehicles meeting tier2 bin5 standards. The Liberty meets those. (open the hood and look and the info on rail). And since it also gets 25% or more better mileage than co?mparable weight vehicle, it should meet the criteria. It may not meet 2007 standards but the info stated vehicles purchased after 01/01/06. Therefore, the '06 libby purchased after that date should qualify.

Did I read it wrong?

That list doesn't make any sense. This is supposed to be a a clean diesel tax credit, but according to that list...every diesel on it has failed the emissions and does not have any credit available....typical government crap.

It isn't really an engineering or technical problem. The obstacles are a political problem falling somewhere between legislative and bureaucratic failure. Congress thinks they're helping us (and appeasing special interest environmental groups) by saying they're giving us tax breaks on buying environmentally-clean(er) diesel vehicles. However, the EPA's definition of clean diesel is the virtually unobtainable equivalent of Mr Clean swimming in a pool filled with bleach. The EPA makes this even harder to achieve by forbidding many reasonable, technical solutions (i.e. urea system), because the EPA believes vehicle owners smart enough to change the oil every few thousand miles are not smart enough to refill an emission control fluid more than once during the lifetime of the vehicle.

thanks for feedback, but by their own initial explanation of a clean burning vehicle, doesn't our vehicle fit? How can the 07 jeep GC fit it then?

'cuse my ignorance.

Judging by that list, no pre-2007 Diesels will be eligable because they do not meet the emissions requirements. The 2007 and newer Diesels will be eligable since they will have additional emissions equipemnt to reduce the nox emissons.

If I read into this correctly, this is really the hybrid tax credit and they have "alternative fuel vehicles" that fall under the guidelines. In other words a CNG powered vehicle from Honda. Current Diesels fall under this catagory, but, they just can't meet the t2b5 emissions requirements without the PMF and ULSD being the only thing available at the pump.

I will not comment on the political discussion

I think our CRD's are a tier 10 engine (don't ask what that means, I don't know) and doesn't qualify. No doubt not "clean" enough. What ever tier it belongs to we don't qualify. I guess we need to elect people from the green party so we have bio diesel readily avalable.

And to drift off topic you don't need to make 150 k a year to get the current tax breaks. We are all paying less taxes.

Allen Schaeffer of Diesel Technology Register commented on this last year sometime. When the bill was first introduced, current tier 2 bin 10 diesels were included. Then the Union of Concerned Scientists found out and lobbied strongly against diesels getting any tax credits. According to Allen, it was only by serious compromise that the bill inluded future tier 2 bin 5 diesels thanks to lobbying efforts by UCS against it. At the time the bill passed, no tier 2 bin 5 diesel vehicles existed anywhere in the world (and may not yet exist today in production) so it was effectively a hybrid-gas or cng tax credit only.
