Well my 20' 10Klb tow strap with loops broke this past weekend trying to get one of my friends unstuck from a mud hole he "fell" into. Didn't get out to measure the depth is what he failed to mention...Anyway just curious what everyone recommends for recovery gear? Are there certain things to avoid, like metal hooks on tow straps for example? Also, what manufacturer of recovery gear do you guys recommend?

Just curious if this could be made a sticky perhaps since I did a search for recovery gear and it led to 125 hits...of which the first 3 pages were no help at all. Then all of us off-roaders that might need gear will now know where to go to get the best quality stuff...THANKS!!!!

A spade used correctly is one of the most valuable pieces of recovery equipment.

don't use hooks on a strap BIG no,no the ones with the loop are best not sure on brand I bought mine from JC Whitney about 12 yrs ago,I've only used probably 3 times to recover people & a dozen times pulling out trees & bushes

you should have a shovel ( spade) military folding ones are nice I usualy have that & a full size

gloves, small piece of a board for your jack, snatch block ( tree saver I believe this is the same) that's all I can think of right now

HAVE TO HAVE:

Full Skids...Engine, Tranny, Transfercase and Fuel Tank
Rocker Protection...Sliders (real ones)
Recovery Points...A Hitch reciever in the rear with a shackle is best
...The stock ones in the front is fine
...A Hidden Hitch in the front would be better
( With Hitch recievers front and rear you can always transport a winch with you that can be switched front to rear and kept inside your cargo area )
Recovery Strap...carry a good quality 30ft Recovery strap
Better Tires...some kind of All Terrain at least...size depends on lift or not

WHAT YOU WILL WANT AFTER YOUR FIRST TRIP:

Lift...will make your trip much better and then add tires to fit
High Lift...good idea to get a High Lift Jack especially after the lift

WHAT YOU WILL WANT NEXT:

Rear Locker or LSD (Good One)...will make you more trail capable
Front LSD or ARB...even better

Things you should have: CB, Tools, Fire Extinguisher, First Aide Kit, Lights (auxillary and flashlight), GPS is always nice to have

The best recovery device is Jeep Club of some sorts. I guarantee that they will get you unstuck. . Then once they get you unstuck they can use you as an achor for everybody else that gets stuck. Really though a cheap milemarker winch or champion winch is probally the best bang for your buck recovery tool. Followed by the old faithfull tow strap, looped of course, and don't go to big though as you loose some of the spring action. Then Hi-lift, spade, gloves. That would be the stuff you carry. The no brainers stuff is proper tow points.

1. get a 20k 20 ft strap with no metal anything, just loops.

2. High lift

3. base for high lift

4. shovel

5. big bag of kitty litter

6. 12-pack of Pepsi

7. couple of MRE's

8. Box of King Dongs, twinkies, little Debbies oatmeal pies, or moon pies

(# 6-8 in case you stay stuck and nobody around to help)

Here is what I have
1 x 8000t 9m snatch strap
1 x 8000t tree trunk protector (also used as equalising strap)
3 x 4t rated shackles
1 x long handle shovel

I'd recommend doing a course on the correct procedures on recovering someone if you haven't already.
Have seen instances where they slip the loop from the snatch strap over a tow ball
And also use of non-rated shackles which resulted in a flying shackle, broken rear window and dented rear door.

We ,LA4X4, do not alow any metal hooks on straps nor do we use shckles of any kind to join straps
I use a walmart 20K strap but I think 1 like that from any where is about the same I carry 1 like that and a big ole 10' 20K lifting sling
it has no "snach or strech" but it will also never break because it was made to lift the jeep X4 so I could never put that much force on it
get a big sledge hammer handel and cut it to about 2' to join the straps
come to think of it I lost my pcs. like that and need to get a new one
out side that the stuff others listed but a dood base for a high lift jack if you dont want to buy there base is a pcs. of 2X12X15" wood
