 Post subject: Anybody running Rocky-Road Outfitters lift kit? good? bad???

I'm looking for a lift kit and came across this http://www.rocky-road.com/kjsus.html they seem to make good points but also contradict them selves. If anyone has any experience with these, please let me know how they are.
Also, I had an 05 KJ for a month (dealer bought it back due to lemons in the engine bay) I got an 06 now and it seems to be sprung/dampened much stiffer. The 05 was much more compliant to high speed off-roading, the 06 almost seems to bounce of the terrain rather then driving over it. Any ideas? And is the ESP packaged with different spring rates and dampening then the models without? Thanks in advance for noob patience.
p.s. what parts physicaly makes the 02 ridehight taller then the rest?

The diff between the Prelowered and Lowered KJs were basically the springs. That being said, there are many different spring combinations between KJs depending on equipment, so every KJ acts a little different when lifted even with the same lifts. If you replace the springs when doing a lift then you don't have to worry about prelowered vs lowered. If you are adding spacer only lifts then there will be a difference between prelowered and lowered.

Rocky-Road does have two lifts that seem pretty good. The old combo lift and the new Rockfather lift. But as with any modification, the result will please some more than others. The big factor seems to be what strut inserts front/shocks rear that you go with. Then if the kit replaces the springs, there are differences between Rocky-Road, Rusty's and ALLJs. Just have to read around and give all three vendors a call....from the horse's mouth so to say. There are also plenty of threads here at L.O.S.T. with all sorts of information.

I have the Rockfaather 1 on my Liberty. It has been on the vehicle for about 2 years. I have had no problems and I like it. My only complaint is the rear is pretty stiff. Off-road it works and flexes great.

I started out with the Rockie road combo kit and it was great.
I came across a set of 2" lift springs and took out the rear spacers.
If your interested I'll part with them cheap.
The only complaint I had about the kit was the instructions were very vaige
and about the strut assembly costing me more time on the first one than it should have
but still very easy to install.

I have the rockfather 2. So far it works fine, my only complaint is that when the front end drops down, going over a speedbump for example, the uppar a-rm contacts the spring with a loud twang. Only way to truly fix is to get new a-arms from al. From what i understand all lifts thus far have the same spring contact problem though.

My Rockfather 2 doesn't do that. If you are getting that sound when the front drops down, that isn't a-arm contact, which might happen on some lifts when the front wheel drops down (all the way down). Something else might be contacting the spring to twang it, and you might want to check that out.

I'm running a Rocky Road Outfitters lift as well, I have the Doetsch Tech rear shocks too. I have about 2.5" of lift and the ride is very nice, could be better if the Doetsch Tech shocks weren't the hardest kind (produced for towing, of which I don't do, yet), but I think if you go with the 3000 series, if you choose to get those, you should be fine.

thanks for all the help everyone. I had a 95 GMC Z71 that had stock bilstien HD's. the faster i went over terrain, the smoother the ride. for example 8" tall speed bumps at 40mph+ were not existant. The 05 KJ i had was the same way. I like that alot! The 06 kj i now have is totaly opposit, the faster i go over terrain the more you know its there and in continued rought terrain, the truck quickly losses its composure. I have read that the EMU shocks, struts, and springs will have a ride that is as i described in the 05 kj and Z71. Is this true and which springs? Med duty or Heavy Duty? and are thier spring rates specificaly tailored to the kj or are they off-the shelf components? Pleaase help.
