Weight capacity of spare tire mount??

I was thinking about putting the spare on the roof and mounting a rack in place of the spare tire.

How much weight is the mount rated for?

What kind of rack? Some people put spare tires on their mount that weigh over 70lbs. A stock tire and rim weighs around 50lbs.

I have the Mopar spare bike rack and carry two bikes on 400+ mile round trips and had my brother sitting on the spare with no ill effects.

I would think that if you keep it closed and dont go on a trail with a load over 50# then you could go 100# maby more
I think that when the made it the factored in things like a bike rack and bikes so that would be like 50# plus the 50# spare you would be ok

I have a rack on my TJ and it is the garvin ind. with the support that goes to the boddy mounts they rate it for 250# I had a med. sized ice chest ,around 50#,
and the spare in its normal spot I whent on a good trail 6-8 on the jeepjambo rating system and my tailgate is bent
no biggie on a TJ but would bring the suck on a KJ
I also would be cautioned about depart angles I know that more than once I took a by pass due to a fear of the spare tire hitting on the way down
and the rack on the TJ has been very close to the dirt at least once ,a very scary angle, but still close

I say build it and see what happens

Could be alittle more than that.. My cragars with tires weigh 70lbs and I have light tires. Some people have the cragers and the wrangler mtr's which weigh around 10lbs more than my tires do.. :wink:

My stock tires and wheels were 45 lbs, my MTR + Moabs are 76 lbs - they've been on the back for 15,000 miles and a few trails - no problems, other folks have mentioned using that at a step to put things on the roof so I think 75lbs would be conservative.

My stock 17's with the wrangler hps were 50lbs..

I ment the tire size 295-75 R 16 on Moabs, not 295 lbs, but once or twice (ok maybe more) I have stood on the tire to load the top, and me and the tire would weight around 295 :shock:

, wow that is a heavy tire after all :roll:

I thought it would be cool to have a small rack that holds 1 gas can, one water can, and ice chest, and a CB antenna. I don't thnink that would go over 100lbs do you?

I think the tire being used to put stuff on the roof might have been one of the rear tires, not the spare. I do know the manual states the rack is only rated for 50 lbs, including the spare tire!
