Confused on the difference in the mopar roof basket carriers

So as near as I can figure, there are 3 mopar roof racks:

82208306 - Renegade style - mounts directly to production side rails and it looks like it just boxes in the side rails and cargo rests on the roof. Is this correct? I didn't see anything like it on the one Renegade at the local dealership.

82209365 - I assume this is the full basket that sits on top of the rails? It says it must be used with production cross bars or mopar sport utility rails.

82209125 - sounds like this one is identical to 82209365 except it looks like it just mounts to the side rails.

Am I right on these? Does anyone have any more info? I'm leaning towards 82209125 because I don't have the cross rails and I'm not sure about the junk resting directly on the roof.

Also, does anyone know how much height these add? I don't want to run into garage clearance issues.

You're right about the Renegade style roof basket.

I don't know about the others.

If you have a lift and add the basket then there will be a good chance you cannot get into a standard 8' door. My renny have the cheap basket and it touched the door before. I have not tried it with the lift yet.

I think the third number the OP listed above is correct (82209125) but I can't guarantee it.

Thanks for the replys - I think the one like Adam's is the way to go. Just need to convince the wife we need it. We are going to be driving 2000 miles at Christmas with 3 people and a baby, so I'm really looking at the extra cargo room

Hey Adam, how much can that basket hold? Because some baskets and other things (ie: cross rails) from mopar can only hold up to 100 pounds or something like that. Just Curious!

You don't need cross bars for the baskets that attach to the rails, like Hoss'.

As for the Renegade (2003-2004) basket, its capacity is lowered (65lbs) because of the weak way it clamps to the cross bars. I modified mine using Thule bars instead of the factory cross bars, and cut holes in the factory plastic box to allow them to rest on top of the rails for better weight transfer.

Now, with a spacer I fab'd, I can mount my Thule Cargo box and add 16 cu. ft of storage up top. THAT'S A LOT! (I've never needed it yet. But I can do it ;-)

Sounds like that x-mas trip with 4 people will require it! Plus you'll be carrying back all those presents for the baby too, don't forget! You may need to pull a trailer back! ;-)

For another option:
I modded a BVG basket to fit inside the stock 03 Rennie basket and mount directly to the cross rail mounting points. Got to keep the Rennie tupperware and still have a low profile basket.

BVG basket, fairly cheap, around $149 or so. Comes in 2 pieces. I cut down one piece shorter, welded the 2 sections back together to form a complet but shorter basket, turned it 90 degrees so the length became the width as one dimension was perfect. Mounted it to flat stock (w/U-bolts covered in heat shrink to prevent rusting) instead of the stock cross rails so it would sit lower. Drilled holes in the flat stock to line up with the holes that the stock cross rails would have bolted to. Got some counter sunk bolts and viola. Oh, yea... A little welding and alot of trial and error for the measurements required as the stock Rennie basket is not square. Narrower I believe in the front then the rear. Turns out to be a nice solid mount.

Hmmm... Just looked at my photos. I wonder when exactly I lost that bungy net? :shock:
